Position Summary
Position performs duties of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) as outlined below. Must be able to work independently and act as the lead resource in a multi-physician clinical practice and lead the Medical Assistants in the clinical operation of a patient care setting; prepares charts and appropriately responds to messages through the EMR system; processes prior authorizations and medication refills directly or in collaboration with the provider; obtains reports and records; directs patient flow and ensures the overall smooth running of the clinical office and patient interfacing duties; prepares and maintains exam rooms. Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- In a leadership role, and as required, may schedule and assign work to Medical Assistants to ensure appropriate staffing; assists in orienting, writing policies and training new Medical Assistants.
- Prepares for office hours by ensuring each exam room is clean and adequately stocked.
- Directs patient flow, assists with special procedures/treatments and completes requisitions.
- Assists with care coordination by doing tasks outlined under the department guidelines, such as calling patients with test results, scheduling appointments, assisting physician with return calls, scheduling diagnostic procedures and admissions, and monitoring new and return patient contacts, including scheduling of appointments and follow-up appointments.
- Interacts directly with patients in clinic setting and completes tasks, which may include obtaining vital signs, verification of medications, medication prior authorizations, patient messages.
- Routes phone messages, patient questions and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
- Promptly alerts physicians of abnormal test results.
- May assist with renewal and authorization of non-narcotic medications per standing orders and department guidelines.
- May administer medications under the order of physicians or nurse practitioner (this includes IM injections).
- Assists in the assessment, monitoring, and termination of prescribed tests.
- Participates in development, implementation, and evaluation of patient care plans with other members of the patient care team.
- Participates in the Psychiatry MA pool of backup coverage as needed.
- Reviews patient data and communicates pertinent information to relevant provider in a timely manner, charting entries appropriately.
- Documents appropriately and accurately in EMR in a timely manner.
- Completes necessary paperwork accurately and thoroughly. Makes appropriate phone calls and coordinates those involved in successfully providing outpatient care.
- Front desk duties – Checks patients in and out; processes payments, schedules follow-up appointments; answers phone, etc.
- Monitors supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies, equipment, or garments are available and that they comply with regulations.
- Performs quality controls for all point-of-care testing in compliance with CLIA, WUSM, and EH&S recommendations and guidelines.
- Monitors and records temperatures for all refrigerators located in clinical areas, in compliance with VFC and departmental guidelines.
- Cross coverage of RN/MA/Front Desk duties as needed.
- Arranges and coordinates meetings as requested.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Location
This position works with a group of providers and will float between two WUSM buildings (600 S. Taylor and 4444 Forest Park).
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of recent physician’s office or hospital experience.
- One or more years of supervisory or team leader experience.
- Epic experience.
- Experience/knowledge working with electronic medical records.
- Professional demeanor, and discretion.
- Willingness to develop computer skills.
- Dependable, independent worker with strong interactive communication skills, management and leadership skills with ability to professionally work with physicians, patients, families, significant others and support staff.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and telephone skills.
- Working knowledge of general nursing theory and practice with ability to recognize and interpret symptoms/conditions and assist in emergency or adverse situations.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of LPN program.
- REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current LPN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois depending on location or received within 3 months from date of hire. Basic Life Support Certification required and must obtained within one month of employment. Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements.

Salary Range
$20.17 - $30.24 / HourlyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
