Nurse Practitioner, MICU, 36 Hours (Days)

The Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (CCNP) is a member of the medical intensive care team and has as his/her primary responsibility the management of a caseload of critically ill complex (multi-organ) patients in an intensive care setting. The CCNP will work in collaboration with the critical care attending. The CCNP has specialized skill and knowledge related to critical care and performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care services in the ICU or step-down unit. The CCNP contributes to excellence in patient care, evidenced based practice, teaching, consulting, and provides leadership to the organization and nursing profession.

POSITION SUMMARY:

ABOUT THE Critical Care/MICU A & B DEPARTMENT AT BOSTON MEDICAL CENTER:

Boston Medical Center has two medical intensive care units (MICUs). One consists of 17 beds (MICU A) and the other consists of 10 beds (MICU B). Patient populations on these units consist of the most acute medical patients including multisystem failure, renal failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis.

EDUCATION:

Master's degree in nursing required. Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Board Certification is required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with authorization by the Board of Registration in Nursing to practice in an expanded role.
Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Board Certification
Registered with the State of Massachusetts and DEA for prescription writing privileges.
Current BLS and ACLS Certification.

EXPERIENCE:

Prior critical care experience required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Expert clinical judgment and ability to be self-directive and demonstrate initiative in an expanded role.
Demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
Full command (verbal and written) of the English language.
Demonstrated ability to apply principles of adult learning to provide effective patient and/or family education.
Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with the various members of the health care team, patients and families.
Computer proficiency inclusive of the ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information required.
Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities in accordance with the practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
