Overview of Department & Mentor
Dr. Freedland's clinical expertise focuses on urological diseases, particularly benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. His approach toward cancer prevention and awareness focuses on treating the whole patient, not just the disease, by combining traditional Western medicine with complementary holistic interventions. His research interests include urological diseases and the role of diet, lifestyle and obesity in prostate cancer development and progression, as well as prostate cancer among racial groups and risk stratification for men with prostate cancer.
Role Summary & Objectives
Fatima will be working to understand the potential role lifestyle factors, specifically diet in cancer risk.
Fatima will meet with the mentors biweekly. These meetings will consist of both virtual and in-person meetings.
Fatima will be working mainly on our new NIH grants, DIET2TREAT, FASTPRO and UROPRO. Both the day-to-day supervisor and the mentors will track their progress toward achieving readiness to publish data on cancer and lifestyle factors. This will be gauged by her ability to 1) understand the science, 2) conduct clinical trial work autonomously, 3) achieve facility in analysis of the data and 4) participation in manuscript authorship.
Fatima will be working with specimens and samples. In the second and third months of the internship, she will be aliquoting stool samples. This means the intern, with training, direction, and supervision, will learn how to divide the stool sample into different vials for testing/processing. The samples will not be deidentified because they will be delivered by patients and the intern may be present for that drop-off. The intern will officially be added to the IRB study and have taken CITITraining, making this allowable.
Fatima will be working with de-identified patient health information in terms of research data. Fatima will assist clinical trial staff to gather non-invasive study assessments and enter responses into databases.
Systems training will include REDCap to process trial data, ESHA to log dietetic information and earn certifications in CITITraining. Other training will include 1) writing workshops, 2) appropriate CITI Training courses, and 3) lab training with senior lab staff.
Limited virtual activities include reading background material and working on manuscripts for publication.
