Do you have a background in caregiving—such as a CNA, CNS, or PCA—and experience assisting individuals who exhibit maladaptive or challenging behaviors?

Southeastern Virginia Training Center (SEVTC) is looking for kind, reliable, and mission-driven individuals to join our team as Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). In this PRN, wage-based role, you’ll provide essential care and support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including those who exhibit maladaptive behaviors.

At Southeastern Virginia Training Center (SEVTC) we serve citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We are an intermediate care facility operated by the Department of Behavioral health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) where we support individuals in state-of-the-art homes with accommodations unique to their specific needs. About the Role

  • Assist individuals with daily living activities such as hygiene, nutrition, mobility, and communication.
  • Provide emotional and behavioral support to individuals with maladaptive behaviors.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans as developed by the interdisciplinary team.
  • Promote independence and self-determination in a safe and structured environment.
  • Collaborate with clinical, nursing, and support staff to deliver comprehensive care.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and follow established safety procedures.

These positions are considered essential personnel and would be required to work in the event of an emergency or facility need. All SEVTC positions are required to work different shifts and/or overtime as requested. 

This position is hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than 29 hours a week and are limited to working 1500 hours in a year.

Training Requirement

All new hires must successfully complete SEVTC’s Pre-Service Training Program. This class is for 10 days, held Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for Direct Support Professionals. Training includes:

  • Person-Centered Practices
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • TOVA (Therapeutic Options of Virginia)
  • Medication Administration
  • Nutritional Management
  • Physical/Behavioral Management

Skills and experience required:

  • Must have ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Must have ability to work with an integrated team.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have active, valid driver’s license.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Prior experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and other disabilities
  • Prior experience working with medically fragile individuals.
  • Prior experience as a Direct Support Professional, a Certified Nursing Assistant, or similar role.
  • Demonstrated experience working with electronic medical records.
