Under the direction of the Nurse Director, functions as a professional by utilizing the nursing process in caring for patients from admission to discharge. Is responsible for incorporating general, age-specific and unit specific competencies into the care provided and is responsible for adherence to Marlborough Hospital standards and standards in accordance with the licensure of Registered Nurses by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and American Nursing AssociationI. Major Responsibilities:
1. Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the Hospital and Patient Care Services division.
a. Utilizes the nursing process and all applicable hospital standards, policies and procedures to deliver and manage patient care.
b. Assesses the patient’s condition and nursing needs; sets goals; prescribes appropriate nursing actions to meet those goals and the physical, psychological, social and rehabilitative needs of the patient including discharge planning.
c. Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to the appropriate person (i.e. physician, resource nurse, Director) and records those observations accurately and concisely.
d. Assigns nursing care to other patient care team members in accordance with the patient’s needs and the personnel’s capabilities and qualifications, and assigns other duties as needed.
e. Administers medications and performs treatments to assigned patients.
2. Develops and implements patient/family education plans based on mutually agreed upon goals.
a. Assesses each patients/family’s learning needs
b. Adapts teaching strategies and materials to the patient/family’s readiness to learn and barriers to learning.
c. Documents responses to patient education efforts.
3. Participates in departmental and/or hospital committees and task forces as requested.
4. Directs and evaluates care given by other levels of nursing staff, using established criteria, policies and procedures.
5. Able to set priorities for care and recognizes and responds appropriately to situations needing immediate assessment and intervention.
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. BLS certification required.
2. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required
Preferred:
1. BSN preferred
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
2. Prioritization and organizational abilities
3. Ability to work flexible and rotating shifts
Preferred:
1. Computer skills preferred
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
