Summary of Position:
Provides professional nursing care to patients in the GI Lab requiring endoscopy, colonoscopy, Sigmoidoscopy, ERCP, TEE and Liver Clinic, utilizing established policies and procedures, ensuring safe and effective care. Accurately and safely administers moderate sedation/analgesia. Monitors patient response, ensures patient safety during procedure and documents according to policy & procedure. Services are provided based on the ages of the population served; Newborn through geriatric - 65 years or older and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary care team. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary care team. Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to identify and meet the individualized needs of all patients served in the GI Lab.

Qualifications
Education:
• Completion of an accredited Nursing program.
• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Experience:
• One year recent acute care nursing experience preferred
• Previous GI Lab or surgical experience preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Knowledge of nursing practices in the GI Lab department.
• Highly effective written and verbal communications skills.
• Proficient computer skills as are required to document, communicate and enter information into the electronic medical records system; Epic experience preferred.
• Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
• Ability to collaborate with various departments in and outside of the Barton Health System in order to provide consistently exceptional patient care.
• In compliance with patient safety standards, must be able to effectively communicate in English; Bilingual abilities preferred.

Certifications/Licensure:
• Current California license or ability to obtain prior to start date.
• Current CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) or ability to obtain prior to start date.
• Current ACLS certification prior to hire or must enroll and complete a Barton course within 30 days

Essential Functions
1. Provide consistently exceptional care at all times.
2. Provides professional nursing care to patients in designated department utilizing established policies and procedures, ensuring safe and effective care.
3. Demonstrates a working knowledge of regulatory and licensing standards and ensures that practice is compliant with standards.
4. Performs systems assessment at intervals consistent with departmental standards of care and patient acuity, recognizing disturbed physiology and abnormal parameters. Assesses pain levels on all patients and assesses psychosocial needs of patients, expressing interest in their progress and comfort and prepares for disposition.
5. Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to identify and meet the individualized needs of all patients served in the designated department.
6. Ensures medication administration is safe, accurate and timely to include: Follows all safety precautions related to patient ID, order confirmation, calculations and double-checking dose accuracy if applicable. Follows procedure when removing meds from floor stock (Narcotics, Pyxis, night lockers etc) Signs and ensures all narcotic wastage is witnessed. Documents all medication intervention to include rationale for PRN medications. Reports all Adverse Drug Events (ADE) according to policy. ADE=ADR (Adverse Drug Reaction) & Medication Errors.
7. Monitors patient reaction and compliance with physician orders. Reports any downward change in patient condition to appropriate individual.
8. Recognizes unusual conditions outside of his/her expertise and seeks guidance of coworkers or supervisors.
9. Functions as a team leader by communicating effectively with team members, completes assessments in a timely manner and support team members offering assistance and guidance.
10. Effectively coordinates and prioritizes scheduled procedures and care activities.
11. Assists physicians with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care.
12. Accurately and safely administers sedation/analgesia. Monitors patient response, ensures patient safety during procedure and documents according to policy & procedure.
13. Assists physicians with examinations and GI procedures and other processes related to direct patient care. Ensures that all specimens are labeled and practice is compliant with OSHA standards.
14. Effectively coordinates procedure schedule allowing adequate time for procedure and room turnover.
15. Keeps patient/family informed of progress, procedures and disposition. Focuses on customer service needs.
16. The patients learning needs, abilities, preferences and readiness is assessed. Effectively educates patient and family in medication use and safety, nutrition interventions, safe use of medical equipment, management of pain and rehabilitation techniques and use of other sources.
17. Monitors and ensures accuracy of documentation in patient medical record. All aspects of patient care are accurately and completely documented
18. Operates equipment and performs job related duties in a safe manner. Ensures proper functioning of equipment and follows procedure when equipment malfunctions.
19. Assists in the orientation, instructing and training of assigned personnel
20. Takes active role in shared governance including committee membership, task force contribution, staff meeting attendance, and development of policy and procedures that contribute to maintaining GI Lab Standards of Care.
21. Responds to the needs of the department by performing other duties, as necessary.

Qualifications Education: • Completion of an accredited nursing program required • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare related field preferred Experience: • Minimum of three (3) years acute care healthcare experience required • One (1) year healthcare-related quality management/performance improvement experience (e.g., participates in clinical ladder, PEP, or unit-based teams) Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: • Excellent critical thinking, data analysis, team building, and leadership change management skills preferred. • Experience in quality management/performance improvement methods, tools and techniques strongly preferred. • Experience as stroke coordinator, sepsis abstractor/coordinator, ACS trauma coordinator, STEMI/STS abstractor/coordinator, AAOS joints coordinator, patient safety officer, or performance improvement coordinator preferred. • Knowledge of The Joint Commission standards, California Title 22 regulations, and CMS Conditions of Participation preferred. • Knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and supporting computer programs. • Knowledge of data reporting and regulatory/accreditation requirements for acute and ambulatory care services and federal, state and local healthcare related laws and regulations • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. • Presentation skills necessary for quality subject matter. Certifications/Licensure: • Current California RN licensure or ability to obtain prior to start date • Current Nevada RN licensure or ability to obtain within 6 months • Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) and/or Certified Joint Commission Professional (CJCP) and/or Certified Professional Patient Safety (CPPS) and/or Lean Six Sigma certification preferred. • Current CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Provides consistently exceptional care at all times. 2. Gathers, analyzes and creates reports related to quality and performance improvement data, which meets reporting agency requirements. 3. Supports the patient safety program with duties to include, but not limited to, managing event reports, promoting culture of safety, performing investigations, completing chart reviews and conducting root cause analysis processes. 4. Performs accreditation, regulatory and licensing functions which include continuous readiness activities, leading and/or coordinating surveys, and serve as liaison to CDPH, TJC, and any other regulatory agencies. 5. Prepares quality-related reports, supports committees and task groups. 6. Communicates with all levels of staff, management and medical staff regarding quality, patient safety and regulatory activities. 7. Leads performance improvement committees, prepares materials and presents information. 8. Serves as back-up to the Quality & Patient Safety Director. 9. Responds to the needs of the department by performing other duties, as necessary.
