Job Summary
The Clinical Float Medical Assistant / Licensed Practical Nurse provides clinical and administrative support across multiple Bloomington Medical Services practices. This position supports physicians and advanced practice providers in a variety of specialty and primary care environments to maintain efficient clinic operations and ensure high-quality patient care.
The float role provides coverage during staff absences, vacancies, and periods of increased patient volume. Individuals in this role must be flexible, adaptable, and able to work effectively in different clinical settings while maintaining consistent patient care standards.
Candidates may be hired as Medical Assistants or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) based on licensure, education, and organizational needs.
Reports To
The Clinical Float reports directly to the Practice Manager for all operational, administrative, and clinical responsibilities and works collaboratively with physicians and advanced practice providers to support patient care.
Essential Functions
Clinical Responsibilities
Clinical duties involve direct patient care and assisting providers with examinations, treatments, and procedures.
Responsibilities may include:
Rooming patients and obtaining vital signs
Collecting medical histories and updating patient records
Preparing patients for examinations, procedures, and diagnostic testing
Assisting providers during examinations and procedures
Explaining procedures and care instructions to patients
Performing phlebotomy and specimen preparation
Performing EKGs or other diagnostic testing as appropriate to specialty
Administering medications within scope of practice
Removing sutures and performing basic wound care when appropriate
Cleaning and sterilizing medical instruments and equipment
Preparing exam rooms and maintaining clinical supply levels
Administrative Responsibilities
Administrative duties support the coordination of patient care and efficient clinic operations.
Responsibilities may include:
Maintaining confidentiality of patient health information
Scheduling patient appointments and procedures
Updating patient records in the electronic medical record
Obtaining insurance authorizations and pre-certifications
Monitoring and responding to patient portal messages
Ordering laboratory tests and imaging studies as directed by providers
Managing inventory and ordering clinical supplies
Following up with patients regarding test results or care instructions
Clerical Responsibilities
Clerical support duties assist with general office workflow when needed.
Responsibilities may include:
Answering phones and assisting with patient inquiries
Greeting and directing patients
Filing and scanning documentation
Handling correspondence
Performing data entry and documentation support
Float Responsibilities
Clinical Float staff provide coverage across multiple Bloomington Medical Services practices and must be able to adapt to varying clinical workflows and specialties.
Responsibilities include:
Providing coverage during staff absences, vacancies, and increased patient demand
Supporting providers across multiple specialties and practice locations
Learning and adapting to different clinical workflows
Maintaining consistent patient care standards across practices
Assisting with maintaining clinic flow and provider productivity
This position requires flexibility to support multiple Bloomington Medical Services practice locations and specialties and may require travel between sites as operational needs dictate.

Education and Licensure
Candidates may qualify for this role through one of the following:
Medical Assistant
Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred
Certification required
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
Current Ohio LPN license required
Work schedules for the Clinical Float position will vary depending on the practice location and clinical area where coverage is needed. Shifts will occur Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
No evening shifts
No weekend shifts
No on-call requirements
This position follows the Bloomington Medical Services (BMS) holiday schedule, and offices are closed on all BMS-approved holidays.
