Manages and has 24/7 responsibility for the nursing practice, patient care delivery, human and fiscal resources, and regulatory compliance of a patient care unit. Maintains a professional environment that supports delivery of high-quality patient and family centered care.

Job Responsibility

  • Manages and has 24/7 responsibility for the team members, operations and patient care activities of a patient care unit.
  • Assists nursing leadership in setting strategic direction for key programs in alignment with organization mission, vision, and values and nursing strategic plan.
  • Communicates, builds consensus, and guides team toward achieving department objectives.
  • Promotes and maintains high quality patient and family centered care in a healing environment.
  • Creates a professional work environment that fosters team member respect, engagement, accountability and optimal patient outcomes.
  • Promotes appreciative inquiry and evidence-based, ethical and compassionate practice.
  • Acquires and manages staffing for patient care unit. Collaborates with HR for requirements.
  • Provides direction and guidance to patient care unit team members and supervisors.
  • Facilitates performance reviews, promotions, pay and corrective actions.
  • Serves as a role model for standards of professional practice (clinical, educational and leadership).
  • Assists in career development planning for team members.
  • Educates teams in new and existing department procedures and systems (information systems, fiscal responsibility, etc.).
  • Manages patient care unit budget. Monitors expenditures and implements action plans when variances are present.
  • Monitors performance metrics that support decision-making to achieve optimal performance levels.
  • Ensures adherence to the established care delivery model, using knowledge of scope and standards of practice.
  • Facilitates continual compliance for unit with the JC, CMS, New York State, DOH, Public Health Law, HIPPA regulations and System, hospital and department standards.
  • Demonstrates current knowledge of clinical competencies for patient population of oversight in order to manage direct patient care.
  • Maintains current knowledge of scope and standards of practice, healthcare legislation, and population health.
  • Identifies and leads opportunities to make changes to improve operations across teams using evidence-based strategies and solutions.

Job Qualification

Bachelors of Science Degree, required. Masters, preferred. (Bachelors or Master’s Degree must be in Nursing)

Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, required.

Specialized certifications, as needed.

6-8 years of nursing experience and 2-5 years of leadership/management experience, required.
