Role Summary
Howard University Hospital is seeking an experienced Clinical Nurse (RN) – Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Per Diem Level II. This per diem role is designed for critical care nurses who thrive in high-acuity environments and are committed to delivering safe, patient-centered care through interdisciplinary collaboration.
What You’ll Do
- Provide comprehensive, direct patient care in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU).
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care at the bedside.
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary team members to achieve patient care goals.
- Maintain accurate and timely electronic documentation of patient care and outcomes.
- Delegate appropriate tasks to licensed and non-licensed support staff.
- Ensure compliance with infection control standards, medication administration protocols, and controlled substance regulations.
- Participate in unit-based performance improvement, quality initiatives, and professional practice activities.
- Support patients and families through compassionate emotional, psychological, and spiritual care.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA policies and procedures.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and educational offerings as required.
Required Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the District of Columbia.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications through the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Minimum of three (3) years of recent ICU experience.
- Nationally recognized nursing certification in critical care or assigned specialty is highly desirable.

Pay + Schedule
- Pay Rate: $61.00 per hour
- Shift: Day Shift – 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM
- Commitment: Three (2) 12-hour shifts per week (24 hours/week)
- Schedules are established in four (4)-week cycles.
- Two (2) weekend shifts per month (24 hours/month) are required.
- Participation in every other major holiday is required, including New Year’s, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
- Additional coverage may be required for historically difficult-to-fill holidays (e.g., Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day).
This per diem role is not benefits-eligible and does not accrue PTO. Participants may be eligible for compensation under the District of Columbia Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Act (ASSLA).
