Job Description

The Nurse Extern, under the direction of a licensed professional nurse, performs care appropriate to the patient population served and meets daily routine patient care needs. The nurse extern may also assist nursing staff by transporting patients, running errands, and transporting equipment to and from units as requested.

Responsibilities

  • Must be a rising senior nursing student in a BSN program or a rising junior in ADN program at the start of the extern program (Must be graduating between December 2026 and August 2027).
  • Nurse Externs will need to have successfully completed Fundamentals of Nursing class during their sophomore year .
  • Nurse Externs must be able to start the program in a PRN status on June 1st, 2026
  • Nurse Externs will be required to complete General and Nursing Orientation during the first week of employment.
  • Nurse Externs will work with their assigned nurse preceptor at a Centra facility and will follow the preceptor’s schedule working 32-40 hours per week.

Qualifications

Required Education: High School Diploma / GED.

Required Certifications and Licensures: Hold a current, active American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) course completion card.

The program offers advancement of clinical knowledge and skill by working directly with a CCH registered nurse. The extern will gain a greater level of self-confidence, communication, critical thinking skills, time-management skills and clinical competence through reinforcing the fundamentals of nursing education, theoretical knowledge, awareness of the role of the professional nurse and the understanding of organizational structure and operations within an acute care setting. Externships last approximately one year and begin in June each year. Externs are paid an hourly rate and required to work full-time (35+ hours per week) during the summer and two 8 or 12 hour shifts per month during the school year. Externs may also work supplemental hours as a nursing assistant, tech, or behavioral safety assistant when these hours are available. Externs who successfully complete the program, obtain their BSN, pass the NCLEX and become licensed in the Commonwealth of PA are guaranteed an RN position at CCH. There is no guarantee of desired shift, specialty or weekly scheduled hours (FTE). Externs who decrease their regularly scheduled hours or resign from employment voluntarily are required to reimburse some or all of the program cost. JOB SUMMARY The Nurse Extern is a participant in a 10 week summer program for nursing students. They must have completed a minimum of 1 medical surgical clinical nursing course in an accredited school of nursing and must have current CPR certification (BLS for Healthcare Provider with the American Heart Association). The nurse extern program is designed to provide the nursing student with an opportunity to strengthen and reinforce his or her knowledge and skill in the practice of nursing under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor and ease the transition of the realities of the work world. The nurse extern will follow his or her preceptor’s work schedule and will assist with the care for that nurse’s patients. All nurse externs will be required to attend or view all classroom presentations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PATIENT / CUSTOMER Essential Accountabilities Assessment: Identifies the patient per hospital policy before carrying out functions.
