Shriners Children's Texas is where hope and healing meet. As one of only four pediatric burn specialty hospitals in the Shriners Children's health system, we are designated by the American Burn Association (ABA) and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma as a verified pediatric burn center. Located on Galveston Island, our 30-bed inpatient hospital provides a full line of both inpatient and outpatient care specializing in burn care, orthopedic conditions, complex skin conditions, and plastic and reconstructive surgery. Our services extend to a number outreach clinics in San Angelo & Marshall, Texas, and Monterrey, San Luis Potosi, Guadalajara, Veracruz, Toluca & Chihuahua Mexico and Panama, which provide children and families access to high-quality, specialized burn and orthopedic care.

 

Job Overview

The surgical technologist (ST) is an integral part of the surgical health care team and functions in the role of scrub person. The ST works under the supervision of the registered nurse and surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

Responsibilities

  • Anticipate, select, use and maintain equipment and supplies for surgical procedure
  • Prepare and maintain sterile field throughout surgical procedure
  • Follow established policies and procedures for sharps, sponge and instrument counts
  • Assist in transportation, housekeeping and Sterile Processing as assigned

Job Summary and Qualifications This Job Description provides criteria for evaluation for the Staff ST/CST. The Staff Surgical Technician/Certified Surgical Technician working in the Staff ST/CST position assures a safe and therapeutic environment for neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients undergoing surgical procedures. What you will do in this role: Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field. Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by “pulling” the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure. Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications. Displays appropriate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology to prepare and assist in surgical procedures. Maintains a safe sterile field by a – positioning sharps correctly b – labeling all medications on sterile field c – understanding of electrocautery and other devices that generate heat to prevent possible fires in the O.R. d – Participating in a “timeout” with rest of the surgical team to maintain patient safety. Demonstrates ability to appropriately set up for a surgical procedure and follow protocol in the counting of supplies/instruments to ensure no foreign object is left inside of the patient. Understands the principles of and can competently assist a surgeon during a procedure and possesses adequate knowledge of the procedure itself.
