Under the supervision of the Director of Abortion Services and in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, Director of Clinical Services and other clinical leaders, the Charge Nurse leads registered nurses in a multidisciplinary team providing quality patient-centered care in both clinical and administrative care settings. They will ensure clinical compliance with regulatory requirements as defined by the state, federal, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) standards and guidelines, and Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPM) policies and guidelines. In addition to providing on-site supervision, training, and support to the nursing staff, they will provide direct nursing and patient care services in support of the PPM mission.
This position full-time and based in Baltimore, MD with 2 days per week in Annapolis, MD.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plans, assigns, monitors and manages the work of nurses including evaluating clinical skills for RNs ensuring skills and competencies are compliant with Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) guidelines, PPM policies, procedures, and practices, and state and federal regulations.
- Develop, maintain and communicate nurse schedules to ensure appropriate staffing and availability.
- Assign roles to nursing staff to ensure workflow efficiency.
- Lead a team of registered nurses in delivering evidence-based and patient centered abortion care.
- Stay up to date on best practices for nurse administered moderate sedation and abortion care.
- Be a clinical expert on safe medication practices and lead clinical teams across the affiliate in medication safety improvement projects.
- Support training of licensed staff on airway management and safe sedation practices as required by PPFA standards.
- Coaches and mentors' direct reports. Identifies and addresses training needs for RNs.
- Implement systems to ensure nurse responsibilities within the clinic are completed. Examples include medication and supply inventory, monthly crash-cart and controlled substance audits.
- Manages Recovery Room supplies and is responsible for ordering, receiving and maintaining compliance with clinical supplies, ensuring correct amount and type of supplies are available to maintain high quality patient care
- In partnership with the Director of Abortion Services and Director of Clinical Services, develop and implement a high-quality, comprehensive, and standardized onboarding curricula for nursing staff with a focus on quality, safety, and patient experience.
- Interprets, applies, and recommends changes to organizational policies and procedures.
- Monitors productivity and professional standards and ensures standards are met or exceeded.
- Facilitate regular Medical Emergency Drills at procedural abortion sites in collaboration with the licensed providers and Risk and Quality manager
- Assists with emergency care and maintains the integrity of emergency equipment.
- Develops staffing guidelines and assignments according to qualifications of staff and business needs of the organization.
- Participates in the implementation of new services and procedures.
- Effectively and accurately communicates with patients, providing patient-centered anticipatory guidance and discharge teaching.
- Reviews patients’ medical history to ensure appropriateness of care.
- Delivers adjunct and non-pharmaceutical pain management to patients undergoing reproductive health procedures by administering mild and moderate sedation under the direct supervision of a physician.
- Able to initiate IV access and administer prescribed medications per standing, written, and verbal orders, including IV/moderate sedation. Monitors and reports patient responses so that their health needs are met.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures related to medication management. Maintains accurate inventory of all controlled substances, clearly documenting dose counts as they are administered or wasted.
- Performs and documents clinical assessments prior to, during, and following procedures. Uses the information collected via these assessments to guide each patient's care.
- Performs routine nursing tasks including monitoring vital signs, administering medications, placing IV catheters, performing blood draws, providing patient education and support.
- Responsible for providing and overseeing care in recovery room following a reproductive health procedure.
- Assess patient’s readiness for discharge following sedation and reproductive health procedures.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
- Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Maryland required.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for patient care and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams required.
- Ability and comfort working with people of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles, in a manner that engages ongoing self-reflection, humility, and continual learning required.
- Strong recordkeeping/writing/organizational/computer skills as well as experience working in Electronic Medical Records required.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills required.
- Ability to handle high-pressure situations and make quick decisions required.
- Proficiency in medication administration, IV therapy, and other nursing procedures required.
- Previous experience in abortion care, OB/Gyn, or freestanding surgical outpatient facility preferred.
- Experience leading interdisciplinary teams preferred.
- Experience providing direct supervision or management of staff preferred.

- OSHA Category: Tasks performed by this position may involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. All employees are required to have Rubella immunization and Tuberculosis screening as a condition of employment, with annual Tuberculosis testing thereafter; all employees are offered the opportunity to receive the Hepatitis B immunization at any time at no charge.
