Akron General's 6400 Psychiatric Unit has a mixed patient population, with some seeking psychiatric support and others medical assistance. As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant on this team, you have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of patients who are struggling with mental health challenges. A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00AM – 3:30PM, including every other weekend and 3 holidays per year. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare units, patient rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer, or emergencies. 

  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.  

  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight, and height. 

  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction and removing urinary foley catheters.  

  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. 

  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. 

  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. 

  • Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area. 

  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.  

  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.  

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire or within new hire period 

  • Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills   

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) 

  • One year of recent acute care experience OR military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1)
