Summary

SUMMARY

The Staff RN - SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) is responsible for completing sexual assault interviews and physical assessments.  Communicates and collaborates with hospital personnel, advocacy and law enforcement representatives.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

*Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

*Collaborates with the assigned Emergency Department (ED) Staff RN to provide care to the sexual assault patient.

*Completes sexual assault interviews and physical assessments according to procedure and as warranted by patient condition.

*Conveys respect to and assures privacy, confidentiality and security for victims of assault.

*Performs physical examinations including pelvic exams with colposcopic pictures; explains all aspects of the examination and care provided.

*Collects forensic evidence while maintaining integrity and security of the assault evidence kit and collected specimens/samples in accordance with the State of Nebraska protocol and law.

*Consults with the Emergency Department physician regarding findings; seeks direction for treatment of additional injuries (e.g. sutures).

*Collaborates with members of Sexual Assault Response team member i.e., Advocacy and Law Enforcement; accesses crisis counselor/advocate.

*Performs therapeutic nursing interventions including:

  • Providing patient/family education and emotional support;
  • Referring to supportive community agencies; and,
  • Involving the patient in the treatment plan and decision-making.

*Meticulously documents the findings and care provided including:

  • physical and psychosocial assessment;
  • identified patient needs and associated nursing interventions;
  • patient’s response to interventions; and,
  • discharge status.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act.  Must provide evidence of certification and/or instruction for practice area as required by State or Federal standards/regulations.  Minimum of one (1) year clinical nursing experience required.Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.  Completion of SANE didactic and practicum education required.

Summary Provides direct and indirect patient care in the emergency department setting. Communicates with physicians about the patient’s clinical condition including hemodynamic monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Participates in performance improvement and CQI activities. Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition. Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patient and correctly interpret the results. Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes neonate, pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Determines staffing requirements and patterns, based on scope of services, complexity of patient acuity and fiscal resources. Ability to quickly and accurately formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness. Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning, family is included in teaching as appropriate. Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately based upon ACLS protocol. Ability to perform at maximum efficiency without compromising quality care.
