JOB DUTIES
- Assesses the patient’s condition and nursing needs prior to, during, and following interventional pain management procedures. Develops and implements individualized care plans according to patient condition, type of procedure, and sedation needs. Revises care plans as patient condition changes.
- Assists physicians during interventional pain management procedures including epidural steroid injections (CESI, LESI), medial branch blocks, radiofrequency ablations, sacroiliac (SI) joint injections, spinal cord stimulator trials, trigger point injections and other procedures.
- Prepares and maintains sterile fields, ensuring adherence to aseptic technique and infection control standards.
- Monitors patients during and after moderate sedation, assessing vital signs, level of consciousness, and airway status per facility policy. Recognizes and responds promptly to adverse reactions or complications.
- Administers medications, including IV and procedural medications, according to established protocols and physician orders.
- Performs patient intake including obtaining vital signs, reviewing allergies, medications, and health history, and preparing patients for procedures.
- Provides pre-procedure and post-procedure education and discharge instructions to patients and caregivers, ensuring understanding of home care and follow-up requirements.
- Documents all nursing care, assessments, and procedural support accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Demonstrates cost-conscious use of supplies and maintains equipment in clean, safe, and functional condition.
- Assists with inventory management, stocking procedure rooms, and ensuring availability of sterile supplies and medications required for scheduled cases.
- Collaborates with providers and team members to support efficient patient flow and timely completion of the daily procedure schedule.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through completion of an accredited School of Nursing. Specialty units may have additional requirements according to their policy.
ACLS and BLS required.
Current State Nursing License.
Must be willing to learn and assist with new procedures as they evolve. Some may be high risk such as intrathecal pump refills, programming spinal cord stimulators, etc.
Communication skills necessary to effectively:
Provide instruction to the patient and/or significant other.
Provide explanations to the patient and/or significant other.
Explain nursing intervention.
Communicate with other members of the health team.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature changes. A large part of work time is standing or walking.
Subject to certain distasteful patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases.
May be scheduled overtime, weekend and/or holiday hours as needed.
Days may be early or late hours and long if needed, depending on scheduled procedures needing to be done or added cases.
May be exposed to potential hazards such as chemical wastes, body wastes, fluids and other possible infectious material.
