About the Role

The PAT/ PreOp/ PACU RN is responsible to handle inbound pre-operative patients to ensure patients receive quality pre-operative screening for our surgical procedures and Post anesthetic care patients emerging from the haze of anesthesia. There are several tasks a PACU nurse needs to perform in a post-operative unit such as guiding patients to consciousness and assisting them in handling personal needs in the first few hours after surgery.

A PAT / PreOp / PACU nurse is important not just for their role as a guide in the outcome of a surgery but also for handling medication administration duties which are very important at this stage. Even though most patients do not remember the PAT / PreOp / PACU nurse that attended to their needs, they play an imperative role in helping patients start on the road to recovery.

POSITION’S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pre-admissions Testing Nurse Duties:

Pre-admission testing nurse or PAT nurse duties include overseeing intake, during which you perform an initial physical assessment and interview the patient to obtain their medical history.
PAT duties include performing any tests the surgeon has ordered, such as an EKG, and may be expected to draw blood for lab work.
PAT nurses are often among the first people patients deal with as they prepare to have surgery. The PAT nurse is expected to help patients understand the process, answer any questions they might have, and discuss their post-surgical care plan with them.
Preoperative Duties of Nurse:
Manage patients’ admission processes to preoperative department in a hospital.
Assess the status of patients’ health in pre-op and ensure accuracy of identification wristband.
Ensure that operative and informed consents are in order.
Determine the surgeon and procedure being carried out.
Take and record vital statistics of patients to ensure readiness for surgical procedure.
Initiate IVs and ensure that patients are informed about the procedure and attending medical staff.
Post-operative Duties of PACU Nurse:
Assess patients’ condition after a surgery has been performed.
Ensure that all vitals are within normal range.
Log all findings in patients’ files.
Answer patients’ questions and ensure that they are kept comfortable.
Make sure that all relevant IVs are in check.
Develop individualized care plans based on each individual patient’s condition.
Ensure that all nursing activities are carried out in accordance to the individual patient care plan.
Monitor patients for condition changes and report any changes to the doctor.
Initiate patient education programs to ensure that both patients and families are educated on procedures and medications.
Determine when patients are ready to be moved to their rooms.
Perform intervention duties in cases of post-operative emergencies.
Record sedation levels and body temperature.
Manage blood and fluid transfusions and draw specimens.
Ensure that the post-operative space is clean and sanitized.
Change bandages and dress surgical wounds.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
Current and active CPR/ACLS/PALS certification.
pediatric experience a must
Current and valid nursing license, in good standing with the State licensing board.
3-5 Years’ experience as a peri operative environment.
Cognitive skills as related to the position.

Job Summary and Qualifications Position Details: Self/preferential scheduling posted four weeks in advance for you to have predictability in your schedule Culture of mutual respect and collaboration among all surgical staff Continuous investment in equipment including surgical instruments, devices and patient positioning for you to do your best work with patient safety and workflow efficiency in the Operating Room Rounding with unit leaders, including charge nurses, to ensure your voice is heard on suggestions for patient care and surgical workflow improvement On-call is required during select non-business hours What you will do in this role: Evaluate patients prior to surgery Provide patient and family education surrounding the procedure and peri-operative process Assume responsibility for patient preparation, including intravenous therapy, preoperative medications, and surgical site verification Participate in surgical site verification, including briefing, time out, debriefing, and universal protocols, according to hospital policy Recognize and respond to patient emergencies Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care while managing evidence-based practices and continuous improvement initiatives Be an integral member of a dynamic interdisciplinary team – consisting of the provider(s), surgeons, surgical technologists and more Consistently apply the nursing process, critical thinking skills, scientific judgment, technical skills and leadership to independently deliver safe nursing care to patients Assess patient condition, monitor throughout your shift, and document changes in patient condition along with the care provided thoroughly Educate patients and families/caregivers about the patient’s medical condition, treatment and follow-up measures What qualifications you will need: Advanced Cardiac Life Spt must be obtained within 60 months of employment start date Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date PALS Pediatric Adv Life Supt must be obtained within 60 months of employment start date (RN) Registered Nurse Bachelors Degree HCA Healthcare has been named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere Institute for ten consecutive years (2010-2019).
