Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago Job Description General Summary: Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the peri-procedural care and anesthetic plan for pediatric procedural and surgical patients. Works in a multidisciplinary anesthesia care team model. Monitors and manages the patient’s physiologic response to anesthesia, sedation and procedures. Works within the multidisciplinary clinical team to provide individualized patient care and patient/family education. Promotes evidenced based practice by conducting or participating in research and academic activities. Provides support to the nursing and leadership staff in order to promote the advancement of the nursing profession at the hospital and in the community-at-large. Essential Job Functions: Perform and document the pre-anesthesia assessment and evaluation of the patient. Review, request, and order laboratory/diagnostic studies. Obtain informed consent for anesthesia and related services. Select, obtain, order, and administer preanesthetic medication or treatment. Develop and implement an anesthesia care plan. Select, obtain, prepare, and use equipment, invasive and non-invasive monitors, supplies, and drugs for the administration of sedation, anesthesia, and pain management services; perform safety checks as needed. Select, order, obtain, and administer analgesic and anesthetic agents, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids, or blood products necessary to provide anesthesia services. Perform all aspects of airway management, including fiberoptic intubation and video laryngoscopy. Select appropriate intraprocedural monitors based on anesthesia standards, patient specific conditions, and surgical requirements. Obtains peripheral or central venous and arterial access as appropriate for the case and the patient condition. Administers intravenous crystalloid, colloid and blood products as necessary to maintain intravascular volume and blood pressure during surgical intervention. Administers the proper dose of anesthetic, anesthesia-related and emergency drugs necessary to maintain appropriate insensibility to pain and hemodynamic stability, adequate perfusion of body tissues and normal oxygenation. Documents accurately on the anesthesia record. Reports any anesthesia complications via proper reporting structures and obtains consultations and follow-up for patient safety. Facilitate emergence and recovery from anesthesia by evaluating patient response, and selecting, ordering, and administering medications, fluids, and ventilator support to maintain patient stability during transfer. Initiate and administer post-anesthesia pharmacological or fluid support of the cardiovascular system. Initiate and administer respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation in the post-anesthesia period. Evaluate the patient’s response to anesthesia and surgery; take appropriate corrective action during the post-anesthesia period. Provide post-anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care. Implement acute pain management modalities. Manage emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining disposition of patients, including providing airway management, administration of emergency drugs and fluids, and using basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques. Place and manage regional and neuraxial anesthetic techniques. Use and interpretation of ultrasound for regional anesthesia and vascular access. Provides expert clinical care, education, consultation, advocacy, research, leadership and mentorship. Promotes the advancement of the nursing profession at Lurie Children’s and the community-at-large. This may include publication, participation in professional organizations and providing educational support to the nursing staff. Collaborates and coordinates care with medical team to deliver evidenced-based care and establish best practices in clinical care. Conducts and participates in research. Meets the Medical Staffs Allied Health Practitioners core measures of performance related to patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal communication skills, professionalism, and system-based practice. Participates in the education of anesthesia trainees and airway learners from other departments. Attends departmental meetings. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others. Other job functions as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Current active state licensure as a registered nurse and an advanced practice registered nurse in the state of Illinois. Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor. Master’s Degree or Doctoral degree required with Doctoral degree preferred. Currently certified or recertified by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists. CRNA experience preferred. Prior experience in pediatrics preferred. Insurable by an appropriate medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by this institution or state. Demonstrated experience as delineated in clinical privileges through credentialing by the Medical Staff Office required. Basic Life Support (BLS), Acute Care Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification required. Strong interpersonal skills, basic computer skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills. Your job is more than a job. Additional Job Description The CRNA administers anesthesia for all types of surgical cases in various settings in accordance with their expertise. Administers anesthesia in four general categories pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation, anesthesia induction, maintenance and emergence, post-anesthetic care, peri anesthetic and clinical support functions. Your Everyday Selects, obtains and administers the anesthetic, adjuvant drugs and fluid necessary to manage the anesthetic. Maintain the patient's physiologic homeostasis and to correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia or surgery. Selects, applies and inserts appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring modalities for collecting and interpreting patient physiological data. Manages patient's airway and pulmonary status using endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, respiratory therapy or extubating. Releases or discharges patients from a post-anesthesia care area, provides post-anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care related to anesthesia side effects or complications. Orders, initiates or modifies pain relief therapy, through the utilization of drugs, regional anesthetic techniques or other accepted pain relief modalities, including epidural analgesia. Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids or drugs or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques. Provides clinical support services outside of the operating room, including but not limited to radiology, endoscopy, emergency department or invasive labs. Provides consultation and implementation of respiratory and ventilatory care upon request or referral for these services. Identify and manage emergency situations, including the initiation or participation in cardiopulmonary resuscitation that involves airway maintenance, ventilation, tracheal intubation, pharmacologic, cardiopulmonary support, management of blood, fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance. Additional nurse anesthesia responsibilities which are within the expertise of the individual CRNA, as authorized by Medical Staff and stated in the policy and procedure manuals. Performs clinical and didactic teaching, supervision and evaluation of students and interdepartmental liaising. Is a member of departmental committees and research participant. The Must-Haves Minimum: LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS License or temporary permit to practice professional nursing and advanced practice nursing in Louisiana. Licensed as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (RN/CRNA). American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
