Nurse Manager - Stead Family Children's Hospital - Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorder Center (L11)

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Nursing is seeking a Nurse Manager to provide leadership and management of the Nursing team in delivering safe, quality, family-centered patient care in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams

Position Specific Summary

Provide managerial and clinical leadership for L11 Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorder Center (clinic and inpatient). Ensures that all staff provide safe clinical care and have the education, methods and resources to accomplish their performance objectives.

Positions in this job family usually have limited involvement in direct patient care and focus their efforts in planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical education programs and research programs of clinical and health service departments.

Key Areas Of Responsibilities

  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff in a departmental unit or functional division
  • Prepare budget or assist in development; provide projections and recommendations. Manage financial data and monitor budget to meet goals. Resolve budget discrepancies
  • Identify trends and determine QA priorities. Develop quality standards. Allocate resources to meet quality and productivity expectation. Develop, implement, and monitor plan to enhance patient satisfaction
  • Identify needs, trends, and forecasts in order to provide quality patient care
  • Develop action plans for unit that meet strategic goals; provide progress reports to department director or director of clinical functions
  • Advocate for needs of unit with healthcare leaders; may collaborate with medical director of unit regarding program development process improvements and equipment budgets
  • Provide clinical education to develop staff competency. Oversee clinical education activities and agreements with other educational institutions
  • Knowledge of and ability to manage effective and smooth operations in a clinical service or department by utilizing various management principles and techniques
  • Understanding of the issues related to the decision-making process; ability to analyze situations fully and accurately, and reach productive decisions
  • Knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulatory bodies affecting healthcare and clinical research practices
  • Ability to apply organization's performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team and organizational performance

Rotations: Off shift call per unit guidelines

Salary: $66,216 per year to commensurate

Education Or Equivalency Required

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing is required. If Master’s Degree is in related field, Baccalaureate in Nursing is required
  • If qualified applicant does not have Master’s Degree in Nursing, the applicant must obtain an advanced degree in nursing, health care administration, or business administration within five years of beginning this position
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license by date of hire is required


Required Qualifications:

  • Recent experience in clinical practice
  • Considerable (3-5 years) experience and demonstrated skill in leadership/management roles
  • Experience with unit operations including human resources, financial management, quality management and patient satisfaction initiatives, staff engagement, and regulatory compliance with various federal and state agencies and the Joint Commission
  • Demonstrated experience with patient/family satisfaction initiatives including modeling service excellence principles/standards and staff engagement
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, families, outside agencies/vendors, and the community
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications
  • Experience modeling service excellence principles/standards
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives


Desired Qualifications

  • At least two years of experience pediatric nursing at an academic medical center or children's hospital
  • Experience working with pediatric hematology / oncology patients including chemotherapy administration in ambulatory and inpatient settings
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam
  • Experience working in large academic medical center
  • Experience working in union environment
