EvergreenHealth is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join the well- established, dynamic Research Team

Job Summary:  This nurse works under the guidance and supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), ensures that the integrity and quality of clinical trials are maintained and conducted in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals, and EvergreenHealth policies and procedures.

Primarily responsible for the accurate completion of visit procedures and collection of information from study patients according to protocols, and for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of research trials participants. In addition, functions as study coordinator for limited studies. Coordinates the operations of research studies in multiple specialties in collaboration with the research coordinators.

Primary Duties:

1. Ensures compliance with each study’s protocol by providing thorough review and documentation at each subject study visit.

2. Responsible for set up, documentation and logistics of trials.

3. Develops tools for study implementation including eligibility checklist, study reference material, standing orders, and clinical summaries.

4. Participates in recruitment and selection of study participants by interviewing and documenting medical history to determine compliance with eligibility requirements.

5. Reviews and documents subjects’ medications and indications for use.

6. Reviews subjects’ medical history with MD or NP.

7. Performs clinical procedures including blood draws, vital signs, drug administration infusions, PICC line care, specimen collection, bladder ultrasound scanning, and electrocardiograms as outlined in protocols.

8. Administers investigational medications and performs patient assessments during clinic visits to determine presence of side effects; notifies Principal Investigator of findings/issues.

9. Dispenses and accounts for study medications.

10. Performs venipuncture and capillary puncture blood sample collections and administers intravenous infusions on patients of all age groups.

11. Provides education and medical information to study patients to ensure understanding of proper medication dosage, administration, and disease treatment.

12. Documents medical data in patient chart to capture protocol requirements and study procedure.

13. Reviews and documents inclusion and exclusion criteria. Maintains organization of study files.

14. Assists the research coordinators as needed.

15. Performs other duties as assigned.

License, Certification, Education or Experience:

REQUIRED for the position:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Two (2) years of recent clinical nursing experience in a hospital, clinic, or similar health care setting
  • GCP and human subjects’ protection training
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification by date of hire
  • Nursing competency skills per scope of practice (i.e., performing vital signs, nursing assessments, performing ECG/EKG, administering injections, phlebotomy, and intravenous skills.)
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture blood sample collections and administers intravenous infusions on patients of all age groups.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, drug calculation skills, clinical medicine, clinical trials and GCP concepts
  • Knowledge of GCP, federal, state, and local regulations, including HIPAA policies
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Word and Excel, electronic health systems and databases used in research environment, or have a willingness to learn and demonstrate proficiency within six months of hire.
  • Detail oriented and meticulous in all aspects of work.
  • Strong follow through skills and ability to proactively to identify and solve problems; demonstrated initiative is imperative.
  • Must have professional demeanor, strong communication skills with the public as well as physicians and co-workers.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as in team environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS This job is responsible for providing a wide variety of professional nursing services which focus on the provision of quality patient care consistent with VMFH (Virginia Mason Francisan Health) standards / values, applicable regulatory requirements and scope of practice for the nursing profession. An incumbent is accountable for the quality of care provided to patients, and has the authority to direct direct care, provide education, seek resources at the unit / department level, and delegate appropriate tasks. Adheres to the department’s and hospital’s policies and procedures, including safety, risk management and regulatory standards. Keeps abreast of trends, developments and regulatory requirements impacting matters within designated scope of responsibility. Administers, oversees and documents the administration of medications (e.g., topically, orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously and intravenously) as ordered by the healthcare practitioner and in accordance with hospital policy. Assesses patient to include physical, psychosocial, cultural, behavioral / emotional, developmental and spiritual needs. Gathers data relevant for patient care. Implements appropriate patient interventions and evaluates outcomes. Plans care appropriately based on needs identified during initial and on-going assessments. Provides holistic, comprehensive, and professional nursing care to patient within the scope of practice. Implements appropriate patient interventions and evaluates outcomes. Prepares patient for discharge and assists with coordinating post discharge needs. Cultural Sensitivity and Competence: Demonstrates proper use of available communication tools / materials for effective communication and understands how the culture(s) of patient population can affect communication, collaboration and the provision of care, treatment and services. Patient Populations Served: Demonstrates knowledge and proper skills associated with the department’s defined specific populations served. Demonstrates competent professional practice and engages in opportunities for professional growth. Demonstrates self accountability to meet stated deadlines for all mandatory requirements. Documents care delivered and patient status utilizing the nursing process in accordance with VMFH standards of care, for example, changes in patient condition, patient responses to intervention and reassessments of pertinent findings. Receives and assures appropriateness, accuracy, timeliness and execution of physician orders. Identifies opportunities for, and participates in, performance / quality improvement activities to improve clinical outcomes, healthcare delivery systems and address patient safety / satisfaction and cost containment. Incorporates critical thinking into daily practice as demonstrated by quality of care provided, transfer of knowledge, follow through and patient outcomes. Leads, coordinates, and communicates the ongoing delivery of patient care services provided by members of assigned patient care team(s); considers patient acuity and the competencies of care team members in delegating and assigning work and in adjusting assignments as necessary; assesses and monitors team performance to ensure the quality of care provided is consistent with the VMFH standards and regulatory requirements.Coordinates nursing care and advocates for patient needs so that all appropriate disciplines are informed of and participating in the plan of care. Prepares patient for examination / procedures. Routinely explains delays. Assesses, monitors, and intervenes as indicated during and post examination or procedure. Provides health care education and guidance to patient and/or families. Educates regarding results, findings and diagnoses to patient and/or patient’s family within scope of practice. Employees may be required to perform other duties as assigned. Job Requirements EXPERIENCE / LICENSURE Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, BSN degree is preferred. Minimum 6 months previous RN experience required. One year of related work experience in an acute care setting is preferred. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Washington State Board of Nursing. Specialty certification, as appropriate to the assigned work unit, is strongly preferred. Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification.
