Description

This position is for students who are enrolled in a surgical tech program and are interested in permanent employment upon graduation from an accredited program. Students must have completed their first two program quarters in the technology program and be a student in good standing. The student will work under direct supervision of a certified surgical technician at all times.

  • Completed second quarter as a student in an accredited Surgical Technology program. 
  • Current BLS certification required. 
  • Ability to work well with physicians, employees, patients, and others. 
  • Ability and willingness to work with patients’ growth and development needs particularly related to the age of patients in the unit/area(s) of assignment. 
  • Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain clinical competency as required for the unit/area(s) of assignment.
  • Ability to manage a chaotic work environment. 
  • Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with standards for performance improvement and organizational values (e.g., efficiency & financial responsibility, safety, partnership & service, teamwork, compassion, integrity, and trust & respect)

Basic knowledge to perform arithmetic calculations when maintaining record of charges normally acquired through completion of high school. Approximately three to six months of related experience, preferred, in order to learn sterile techniques, become familiar with anesthesia equipment and cleaning procedures, and learn inventory techniques. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with the surgical team and maintain effective contacts with physicians and hospital employees. Familiarity and manual dexterity required with all basic surgical instruments, supplies, equipment and procedures. Basic analytical skills necessary to develop solutions to problems concerning technical needs of surgery. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when conducting procedures and operating special computer software. BLS-HCP Certification required and/or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. WORKING CONDITIONS Surgical areas work environment with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions/chemicals. Possible exposure to infectious agents when handling instruments or hazardous materials. Potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Employees in this classification are responsible for preparation of operating rooms for surgical procedures; maintaining operational readiness of specialized equipment; serves as maintenance of operating room instruments and equipment following surgery.
