Teaching Hospital Surgical Technologists act as a scrubbed or sterile member of the surgical team who provide instruments and equipment to the surgeon during operations. Incumbents identify and plan the proper instrumentation and implementation for operative procedures; ensure proper sterile and aseptic techniques within the surgical environment; and assist the surgical team by setting up and passing sterile instruments and equipment. The Surgical Technologist 2 may perform all of the same duties as a Teaching Hospital Surgical Technologist 1, which includes: Assist the Registered Nurse and surgeon in identifying, gathering, and preparing medical instrumentation and specialty equipment for surgical procedures. Assist surgical team with the setting up and passing of sterile instruments during surgical procedures. Ensure the proper handling of instruments, sponges, sutures, implants, surgical supplies, and specimens in a manner that ensures asepsis and patient safety. Bargaining Unit CSEA Job Summary The Department of Nursing at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Surgical Technologist 1, NS31 Labor & Delivery (Nights). Teaching Hospital Surgical Technologists act as a scrubbed or sterile member of the surgical team who provide instruments and equipment to the surgeon during operations. Incumbents identify and plan the proper instrumentation and implementation for operative procedures; ensure proper sterile and aseptic techniques within the surgical environment; and assist the surgical team by setting up and passing sterile instruments and equipment. The Surgical Technologist 1, under the direction of a Surgical Technologist 2, or a Registered Nurse will: Assist the Registered Nurse and surgeon in identifying, gathering, and preparing medical instrumentation and specialty equipment for surgical procedures. Assist surgical team with the setting up and passing of sterile instruments during surgical procedures. Ensure the proper handling of instruments, sponges, sutures, implants, surgical supplies, and specimens in a manner that ensures asepsis and patient safety. Prepare the sterile field and assists in preparing the operative site and draping the patient. Transport patients to and from operating room and performs preoperative shave preps. Assist in the preparation and aftercare of equipment and supplies. Clean unsanitary instruments, checks for defective items, and assembles instruments correctly in a container or tray, and wraps and labels instruments appropriately. Test the operation and efficiency of equipment and reports problems to the Registered Nurse. Collect and transport required operative set-up to surgical room. Assist in cleaning and restocking rooms according to established standards. Assist in taking inventory of equipment and supplies for specialty areas. Required Qualifications Successful completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist education program and current surgical technologist certification by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization. Applicants may be employed during the 12 month period immediately following the completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist education program while pending the receipt of certification by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization. OR completion of an appropriate training program in surgical technology in the United States Armed Forces or United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. OR possession of a license and current registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State. A Surgical Technologist plays a critical role in the operating room, assisting surgeons and the surgical team to ensure the safe and effective care of patients undergoing surgery. This position requires strong attention to detail, a commitment to patient safety, and a thorough understanding of surgical procedures and protocols. Key Competencies & Responsibilities Aseptic Technique and Patient Safety: Maintain impeccable aseptic technique to prevent hospital-acquired infections. Perform a thorough surgical scrub and maintain a sterile field throughout all procedures. Prepare the operating room, ensuring all necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies are sterilized and ready for use. Properly discard contaminated and hazardous materials according to hospital policy. Maintain a working knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, supplies, and equipment. Ensure the operating room is stocked and ready for each case. Surgical Assistance: Assist the operating surgeon under direct supervision. Prioritize and prepare for specific operative procedures using appropriate case requisitions. Respond appropriately to unanticipated or emergency situations that may arise during surgery, including assisting with patient CPR during cardiac arrest. Equipment and Inventory Management: Operate equipment properly, following manufacturer recommendations and OR protocols. Ensure all equipment is cleaned and maintained for use by other staff and patients. Report any issues with equipment or supplies promptly. Procedural Adherence: Adhere to all established hospital policies, procedures, and directives. Follow quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Education & Experience High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of a surgical technology program accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) . Credentials & Qualifications BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) . CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) . Certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
