Position Summary: Employee works with other members of the patient care team to deliver care to specific patient populations. Essential Functions: Participates in the delivery of patient care for population groups under the direction of an RN/LPN including but not limited to the following: • Lifting, turning, and positioning patients utilizing Safe Patient Handling equipment (> 35 pounds), as appropriate. • Observing confused and difficult patients • AM/PM Hygiene care • Toileting, shaving, washing, brushing hair, dental and mouth care • Feeding • Assisting with range of motion exercises • Mobilizing patients ‐ transfers and ambulation, utilizing Safe Patient Handling equipment (> 35 pounds), as appropriate and following the Mobility protocol • Exercise protocols • Discontinuing foley catheter • Simple dressing changes • Incentive spirometry supervision • Surgical preps • Postmortem care • Administers cleansing enemas • Removal of peripheral IV catheters • Sits with confused/disoriented patients or those requiring 1:1 observation for safety/suicide purposes, as assigned • Performs and records accurately: • Temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, heights and weights • I & O • Records bowel movements • ADLs and activities • Performs and records the following specimen collection: • Obtains urine, stool, and sputum specimens for patients; instructs patients in proper specimen collection technique. • Completes the following support activities. • Completes EKGs. • Transports patients as needed • Serves, sets up and retrieves trays • Distributes water pitchers as appropriate • Orders and distributes nourishment. • Transports equipment • Transports blood products to and from the patient care area. • Participates in patient safety/patient satisfaction. • Answers call bells • Participates in patient rounding • Reports any signs of abuse to the nursing staff • Recognizes, troubleshoots and initiates corrective action needed on equipment. • Maintains neat and tidy environment (empties laundry, delivers equipment, keeps patient rooms clean and safe). • Inventories and assures disposition of patients' belongings when admitted, transferred, and/or discharged. • Assures proper storage of equipment. • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates plan of action • Notifies RN/LPN of any changes seen in patient's condition • Complies with policies and procedures of the hospital/nursing department. • Supports the philosophy of the hospital and department of nursing. • Maintains CPR certification and practice • Demonstrates cost‐effective patient care by demonstrating proper use and care of equipment, appropriate and prudent use of supplies, accurate charging of supplies; performing other division‐specific tasks, and appropriate utilization of available resources. • Participates in performance improvement activities to improve service and care. Demonstrates strong communication and organizational skills. • Ability to communicate using telephones, computer systems. • Answers telephone promptly and politely, identifying self, title, and department. Receives and sends messages in an accurate and timely fashion. • Communicates with the patients, family, and members of the healthcare team in a concise, tactful and considerate manner. Must represent the hospital in a professional courteous manner, while being sensitive to how others perceive both verbal and non‐verbal communications. Chester County Hospital - Nursing Extern Program Start Date: Monday June 22, 2025 Summer Requirements: June, July and August – 36 hours a week (3/12 hour shifts) Fall and Spring Semester – 2/12 hour shifts a month (Saturday and/or Sundays) The Nurse Extern-to-RN Program is a training and mentoring program designed for students currently enrolled in an eligible BSN program who wish to pursue a nursing career at Chester County Hospital (CCH) after becoming licensed to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The program offers advancement of clinical knowledge and skill by working directly with a CCH registered nurse. The extern will gain a greater level of self-confidence, communication, critical thinking skills, time-management skills and clinical competence through reinforcing the fundamentals of nursing education, theoretical knowledge, awareness of the role of the professional nurse and the understanding of organizational structure and operations within an acute care setting. Externships last approximately one year and begin in June each year. Externs are paid an hourly rate and required to work full-time (35+ hours per week) during the summer and two 8 or 12 hour shifts per month during the school year. Externs may also work supplemental hours as a nursing assistant, tech, or behavioral safety assistant when these hours are available. Externs who successfully complete the program, obtain their BSN, pass the NCLEX and become licensed in the Commonwealth of PA are guaranteed an RN position at CCH. There is no guarantee of desired shift, specialty or weekly scheduled hours (FTE). Externs who decrease their regularly scheduled hours or resign from employment voluntarily are required to reimburse some or all of the program cost. Requirements: · Enrolled in good standing in an accredited Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) program; and currently in the last year of study. Completion of courses in med-surge nursing; and has completed at least two clinical rotations in a hospital setting. Current CPR certification is required After Completion of program · Employment as a CCH registered nurse is assured to the successful nurse extern after completing the Extern Program, obtaining their BSN degree and taking and passing the NCLEX and holding licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Pennsylvania. · At the onset of the Nurse Extern-to-RN Program, the Extern agrees to continue employment in the position of RN at CCH for a period of 18-months. There is no guarantee of shift, specialty or full/part-time status in the position as a CCH RN. Selection is done through posting the position on the CCH Career Website. Summary: The Student Nurse/ Co-Op (Level 2) interacts with patients at the most intimate level and highest frequency. While working under the direct supervision of the registered nurse, the Student Nurse/ Co-Op (Level 2)'s primary focus is to support and assist in the delivery of quality care to patients and families. Some of the major responsibilities include participation in RN/CNA hand-off communications and unit huddles, timely collection and reporting of patient data, demonstrating safety protocols and adherence to policies at all times, timely notification and escalation of data or clinical conditions, remaining alert and responsive to activities on the unit, and demonstrating a genuine care for the patient (paying a close attention to the basics), e.g., active listening, timely response, cultural sensitivity, individualized approach to care.
