Changing Lives. ® Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SNICU) (5 JPP) The Surgical and Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (SNICU) is the largest intensive care unit in Iowa, seeing more than 2,500 patients each year. The 36-bed unit is structurally divided into three bays. It is staffed by a multidisciplinary team skilled in the care of acutely ill surgical and neuroscience patients. Beyond routine care for patients requiring intensive care following surgery, the SNICU provides care for patients suffering from: Respiratory failure Sepsis Multi-system trauma Peri-operative complications Acute neurological injuries Pre- and post-organ transplantation care Pain The SNICU provides a full range of intensive care services, using advanced monitoring techniques and equipment including: Pulmonary artery catheters Arterial lines Intracranial pressure monitoring and CSF drainage Ventilatory support Continuous infusion of vasoactive medications Care for micro-vascular reconstruction Advanced neurological monitoring Multiple renal replacement therapies (CRRT) Nitric oxide Hypothermia Management Pentobarbital Comas The SNICU is grounded in the belief that our primary responsibility is to provide care that will assist critically ill patients to cope with the physiological and psychological components of their illness or injury. Changing Lives. ® Respiratory Specialty and Palliative Care Unit (RSCCU) (7 JCP) RSCCU is a 25-bed intermediate, ICU step-down unit that uniquely incorporates two different patient populations on one floor.19 beds include pulmonary care for adult patients with lung diseases and complex pulmonary problems such as: lung transplant, COPD, new/chronic trach patients, obstructive sleep apnea, asthma, cystic fibrosis, ventilator patients, and neuro-muscular disorders. Being an intermediate unit, our patients do require more care than provided on acute medical/surgical unit. The unit also staffs Respiratory Therapists 24/7. The other 6 beds serve Palliative Care patients. These patients consist of a wide range of diagnoses with varying treatment plans. Some are cancer patients receiving pain and symptom management, whereas other patients are receiving end of life care. Our staff will sometimes work in tandem with outside hospice agencies for actively dying patients. Clifton Digestive Health Center was established in 1985 as the first multidisciplinary subspecialty unit at UI Health Care and one of the first nationwide. It is the state's leader in diagnosing and treating patients with complex problems of the digestive system. Job Summary: University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking 50% - 100% Staff Nurses to work for the Digestive Health Procedure Suite. We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Nurses to join our team. The ideal candidate(s) will apply nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness. This role involves coordinating the continuum of care across various settings and developing comprehensive patient care plans. Key Responsibilities Apply nursing theory to assess, diagnose, treat, and evaluate patient responses to health and illness. Assess patient health care preferences and expectations. Collaboratively coordinate the continuum of care across settings. Develop patient care plans based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions, prescribing interventions to attain expected outcomes. Implement patient care plans according to patient priorities, including interventions identified through nursing diagnoses. Document and report interventions and patient/family responses. Collaborate and integrate contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plans. Develop, coordinate, and implement transfer/discharge planning throughout the episode of care. Implement nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Follow universal precautions. Manage a procedure unit that sees 50 – 60 patients/day with 8 total procedure rooms. Daily Duties Provide conscious and deep sedation and assist with monitored anesthesia. Assist with specimen collection and processing. Track supplies and equipment used in each procedure. Provide emergent care as needed within ACLS guidelines. Provide patient care in pre and post-procedure areas. Late and on-call shifts required, self-scheduling is practiced here. One holiday on-call per year and one weekend call every 3 months. Salary : $61,183 minimum at 100% effort to commensurate. Salary will be based on years of experience and percent effort. Education An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required Required Qualifications Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions. General computer skills are required Must be able to wear up to 25 lbs. in lead shielding for ERCP procedures. Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire Desired Qualifications Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Masters Degree in Nursing is highly desired. If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.
