Nearly 80 hospital beds are dedicated to inpatient acute rehabilitation—more than any other hospital on Long Island. Patients are often admitted for acute inpatient rehabilitation with the following conditions or diagnosis: amputation, brain injury, cardiac or pulmonary conditions, hip fracture, neurological conditions, orthopedic conditions, sports injuries, stroke, spinal cord injury, or traumatic injury/fractures. St. Charles Hospital is the only Long Island hospital accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient medical rehabilitation for adults and children. The Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is designed to assist patients who have experienced a loss of function from an injury or illness such as stroke, traumatic brain jury, spinal cord injury, joint replacement surgery or other event that has affected their activities of daily living.
