Responsibilities The position of Chief Nurse Anesthetist is responsible and accountable to the overall operations and management of the CRNA staff, including hiring, evaluating, and mentoring. Collaborates with the Chair of the Anesthesiology Department in developing, interpreting, and applying department policies, budgets, and long-range plans. Analyzes and evaluates activities to assure established quality patient services and plans appropriate utilization of staff time and capabilities. Coordinates these activities with other hospital departments. The Chief Nurse Anesthetist will demonstrate professional and clinical leadership, expertise, and judgment. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited Nurse Anesthesia Education Program with a Master’s Degree in a related field; or graduation from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education programs prior to January 1998 is required. Certified as an APN in the State of NJ is required. A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a nurse anesthetist is required. Candidate must have sufficient sensory capacity to observe the patient and patient monitors. Candidate must be able to communicate effectively in both academic and health care settings. Candidates must possess the emotional health required for full utilization of their intellectual abilities, the exercise of good judgment, and the ability to effectively function in the face of uncertainties inherent in clinical practice. Must show evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work in teams and possess demonstrated ability to exercise of good judgment, and effectively function in the face of uncertainties inherent in clinical practice. Demonstrated professionalism, leadership, academic excellence, decision making ability and expertise sufficient to coordinate the administrative and clinical activities of the CRNAs and anesthesia technicians. Candidate must be able to read and understand medical and nursing literature. Ancillary privileges granted by the University Hospital Medical Staff must be successfully obtained upon hire.

These responsibilities also include patient education and discharge planning. The Registered Professional Nurse places emphasis on mobilizing patients and preventing skin break down, falls and implements the appropriate measures to achieve this. The Registered Professional Nurse is a member of a designated care team and collaborates, coordinates and guides team members in planning patient care in a safe environment and achieving patient care goals according to the patient/family developmental stage and cultural expectations. The competent practice of the Professional Registered Nurse is evidenced by patient/family goal achievement, patient/family satisfaction, care and services demonstrated and thoroughly documented in accordance with American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Practice, Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Organization Standards Sentinel Event Alert Recommendation, Patient/Family Centered Principles, Department of Health Standards and University Hospital Policies and Procedures. Responsibilities The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is a skilled health provider who through a written collaborative practice agreement with a physician is credentialed through the Medical Staff Office. As a member of the Medical Staff the APN demonstrates standards of professional practice that includes ethical decision making, job activities related to quality assessment/improvement, self-evaluation, leadership and research. The APN is self-directed and purposeful in seeking necessary knowledge and skills to develop and maintain competency.The APN in the Hematology/Oncology Practice utilizes critical judgment in the performance of comprehensive health assessments, differential diagnosis and the prescribing of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments in the direct management of patients diagnosed with a variety of hematologic or oncologic diseases. The APN practice will promote wellness through conducting research, providing education and works autonomously as well as in interdisciplinary teams as resources and consultants. Qualifications A current Registered/Professional Nurse license and registration in the State of New Jersey is required. Completion of an educational program which is designed and conducted to prepare graduates to practice as an NP/APN with a master’s degree in nursing and eligible for certification by a national certifying body. Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and creative problem solving are essential. A minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience and current BLS certification are required; knowledge and experience in hematology/oncology preferred. Oncology Nursing Society (ONS)/ONCC Provider Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certificate and/or Radiation Therapy Certificate preferred. Candidate with national Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification preferred. Participation in pertinent professional and/or specialty organizations preferred.
