Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Under the supervision of the ER/Inpatient Manager, and direction of the Charge Nurse and Registered Nurses of the unit, performs various direct patient care activities. Assists patients, across the age continuum, with activities of daily living, providing basic nursing care and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment. Collects non-invasive body fluid specimens and gathers vital signs, but does not start or administer intravenous fluids. Aids physicians and nursing staff members with procedures if needed. Documents patient interactions as needed and demonstrates the ability to provide clerical support and receptionist duties to enhance delivery of patient care. Projects a professional demeanor and appearance while maintaining the confidentiality of patients, coworkers, and facility information and adhering to the HIPAA policy. Reports, in good faith, any known or suspected activity that appears to violate laws, rules, regulations or the SP Code of Conduct. Fulfills annual continuing education requirements. Patient Population: The patient population served by South Texas Spine & Surgical Hospital is a minimum of 12 years and/or of adult stature to geriatric patients requiring or seeking pain and/or surgical intervention. Physical Requirements: May be expected to lift up to 50 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance. May be expected to push or pull 150-300 pounds with assistance. Work is of medium demand; walking or standing most of the time while on duty. Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required. Optimal auditory acuity required. Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or armamentarium is essential to performing assigned duties. Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. May be subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions needed to be taken is essential. Climate control and ambient temperature variances may be experienced and required by patient care. OSHA Exposure Classification: Job Category I. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which standard precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn. Qualifications: Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S. High School Graduate or equivalent preferred Certification as a Medical Assistant BLS prerequisite 6 months - 1 year of experience in the field or in a related area. Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures with a particular field. Knowledge of state, federal and accrediting body regulations and standards related to healthcare. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English, with additional languages preferred. Ability to comprehend written and oral instructions. Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for his/her own professional advancement and that of others. Must be computer literate with basic fundamental computer skills that are required to perform essential job related duties. SERVICE Provides effective patient care across the age continuum under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Cleans utility rooms, cleans equipment as needed, reports equipment that is out of order. Appropriately orders and handles supplies on the unit when assigned. Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patients in a safe manner. Orders and/or notifies Charge Nurse of the appropriate supply needs. Makes copies of needed forms as necessary. Checks to ensure rooms are stocked with the necessary supplies and assists with cleaning and maintaining patient rooms. QUALITY Collects and records Vital Signs, I&Os and Accu-Checks in an efficient, accurate and timely fashion. May perform phlebotomy, processing and preparation of laboratory specimens. May administer EKGs and send to appropriate place for reading. Reports any variation from normal values immediately to the Registered Nurse responsible for that specific patient for continuum of care. Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures. Follows standard/isolation precautions and safe practices in handling of biohazardous material. Appropriately handles clean and dirty linen. Responds timely to issues that require a decision. Sets priorities, evaluates the quality of his/her work. Looks for new approaches to problems and is able to adapt to new procedures and methods. FINANCE Conserves resources and minimizes cost when possible. Participates and assists with implementation of cost saving initiatives for the department. Communicates ideas for cost containment and reducing expense. Medical record documentation should be completed accurately for all cases. GROWTH Through competency and customer service, employee will contribute to the growth of the facility. Attends training seminars, staff meetings and reads all monthly staff meeting minutes. Employee engages in customer service conversations with physicians, staff, vendors, patients and family members. Fulfills annual continuing education requirements. Demonstrates knowledge of disease entities. 
FUNCTIONS/BEHAVIORS 1.Receives assignment for the day and checks rooms for equipment as necessary. Checks surgical posting card and surgeon preference card for supplies needed and works together with circulating nurse to open instrumentation / packs for the case in a timely manner. (E 10%) 2.Independently scrubs intermediate and complex surgical procedures in the first scrub role. Coordinates and collaborates with OR board runner and surgical team to ensure proper and adequate instrumentation, supplies and resources are readily available to manage case volume. (E 10%) 3.Proficiency and Knowledge in congenital heart anatomy and physiology, procedures, specialized surgical instruments, and equipment used in congenital heart. (E 25%) 4.Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving in relation to the procedures performed by anticipating supply or instrument changes as procedures evolve to meet the surgeon’s needs. Able to retain knowledge for future procedures. Must be able to perform the five (5) core emergency cases by the end of their probationary period. Core cases are: Emergency Craniotomy, Orthopedic Trauma, Penetrating Eye Injury, Door-busting Trauma, Code Angio/Vascular. (E 10%) 5.Provides updates to patient care coordinator to maintain accurate preference cards for cases performed. Assists in outreach to physicians regarding new or uncommon procedures for preference card selection, modification, and creation. (E 5%) 6.Performs the preceptor and mentor role for surgical technologist, surgical technologist students and serves as a resource for nursing students, medical students, and resident on aseptic technique. Mentors support staff on instruments and equipment. (E 5%) 7.Assess status of instrumentation and advise on needs for purchase and/or replacement of instruments, supplies and equipment using a cost conscious approach. Assists with long term planning for service line growth. (E 5%) 8.Coordinates and collaborates with OR board runner, patient care coordinators, and surgical team to ensure proper and adequate instrumentation, supplies and resources are readily available to manage case volume, facilitate efficient turn overs, and First Case on time starts. (E 5%) 9.Participates in the growth of the unit through upholding the standards of behavior. (E 10%) •Addresses interpersonal conflicts directly with individuals involved, in a positive manner, utilizing supportive resources as necessary •Functions as a team member by assisting colleagues •Provides feedback to colleagues directly in a non-threatening relationship-preserving fashion. •Treats mistakes by self and others as opportunities for growth, thereby creating a culture in which feedback is not only safe, but expected. •Sets a positive tone, even in challenging situations, by treating others with caring and respect. 10.Works as a team throughout all perioperative tasks including but not limited to: assisting in the gathering and returning of equipment and supplies, moving patients, room turnovers, and opening and set up of operating rooms. (E) 12.Appropriately adapts assigned patient assessment, treatment and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific and other developmental needs of each patient served. (M 5%) EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE Associates Degree and completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program and a certification as a surgical technologist; OR received certificate prior to 2022; OR employed as a surgical technologist for one (1) year in a health care facility before September 1, 2009; OR, completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the Armed Services of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service; Two years’ Congenital Heart experience in the Operating Room as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE High school diploma or equivalent experience is required. Course of study in repair and maintenance of dialysis equipment or RO water treatment is required. National Certification through BONENT or NANT preferred. Two years of experience in preventive maintenance activities, maintenance and repair of dialysis machines, and water treatment equipment are required.
