Patients may be admitted to the unit at any time during their journey through the cancer continuum, from initial diagnosis to surgery, chemotherapy, management of complications and terminal care. Patients with medical-surgical conditions and hematological disorders such as sickle cell crisis may also be admitted. Care on this unit is provided by a multidisciplinary team of registered nurses, patient care assistants, physicians, nurse practitioners, case managers, health unit coordinators, an oncology pharmacist, an educator, chaplains, nutritionists, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and respiratory therapists. Unit specific certifications may be required. More about our MICU unit: The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)/7 West is a 20-bed intensive care unit. This unit provides holistic and compassionate care for patients with numerous diagnoses including pneumonia, GI bleed, respiratory failure, sepsis, heart failure, MI, post-cardiac arrest, acute renal failure, multi-system organ failure and many others. Nurses utilize a variety of equipment including intra-aortic balloon pumps and continuous dialysis machines. The MICU is a closed unit with an intensivist physician serving as the attending for each patient. The Christ Hospital is a teaching facility which allows the staff to work closely with the medical residents in the MICU and provides an opportunity for new nurses to receive specialized training in the Critical Care Nurse Residency Program. The MICU and SICU share primary responsibility for the Rapid Response Team (the STAT Team) and respond to calls throughout the hospital. The MICU RNs strive to utilize technology and evidence-based practice to provide compassionate and efficient care to achieve best possible outcomes for patients.

Unit specific certifications may be required. More about our CVICU unit: The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) is a 16-bed cardiovascular recovery and intensive care unit. It is a fast-paced environment where state-of-the-art technology, nationally recognized standards of care and critical thinking skills are utilized by the all-RN staff to provide compassionate patient and family-centered care. Staff on this unit are highly proficient in pre-operative and intra-operative support as well as immediate post-operative phases of cardiovascular procedures. This includes open heart surgery, ventricular assist device implantation, and various interventional procedures including transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Acute cardiology and heart failure patients also receive care in CVICU, along with overflow medical and surgical intensive care patients. Staff expertly manage all types of invasive lines, medications, hemodynamic needs, intra-aortic balloon pumps, continuous dialysis and ultrafiltration machines, and various ventricular assist devices. The success of their nursing staff is their number one priority and is supported through their encouraging environment of comradery and mentorship. 
Job Description The practice of nursing requires specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide care to groups and individuals. The RN utilizes knowledge derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. All care is provided based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCH which promotes an on-going partnership between patients and families and the team of healthcare providers. The care is culturally based and age specific. The RN adheres to American Nursing Association (ANA) code of ethics and to the scope of practice described in the Ohio Nurse Practice Act. Responsibilities The Nursing Process Assessment - Demonstrates the nursing skills to complete a holistic assessment of the patient’s physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and education needs utilizing The Christ Hospital Professional Practice Model. Understands signs and symptoms and data related to the patient’s presenting needs and actual or potential nursing diagnosis. Recognizes and appropriately reports to the physician and charge RN pertinent abnormal data and changes in the patient’s condition. Utilizes appropriate handoff methods to collaborate with other healthcare team members to communicate pertinent data regarding patient’s physiological and psychological data. Assesses patient, family, and environment for safety risks, proactively seeks out and performs safety initiatives. Diagnosis and Planning - Utilizes collected data to establish and prioritize a list of actual, and potential, individualized patient problems and needs. Prepares, coordinates, and revises multidisciplinary plan of care in collaboration with the patient and family to be supportive of the TCH model of care/Patient and Family Centered care. For each problem a measurable goal is set. Communicates the plan of care utilizing SBAR and handoff processes with all team members. Establish priorities of care, discusses plan of care during shift report, and participates in care conferences. Initiates discharge planning upon admission, makes appropriate referrals consistent with the anticipated length of stay. Implementation – The method of providing evidence based, quality care is based on assessed needs and standards of care while adhering to hospital policy and procedures to achieve set goals. Performs and delegates nursing actions based on appropriate orders demonstrates critical thinking and accountability for appropriate implementation. Provides ongoing, individualized holistic patient and family education based on needs and plan of care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. Demonstrates critical thinking upon review of physician orders, making appropriate referrals, & contacts other health team professionals. Responds to emergency situations that require an immediate, controlled precision in a skillful manner. Implements measures to prevent contamination and/or transmission of disease to include the use of appropriate protective devices and equipment to prevent injury and maintain a safe environment. Evaluation – Continuously evaluates nursing practice related to the plan of care in relation to the standards of care established through evidence-based literature and standards established by professional organization that have been built into order sets in the electronic medical record, the individual plan of care, and patient outcomes and goals. Evaluates effectiveness of nursing care interventions, adjusts or continues with plan of care based on patient and family response. Maintains continuity of care by continuous evaluation during ”handoff” report, rounding, and upon transfers to other specialty units and post care facilities. Documentation Nursing process is accurately and concisely documented in the patient’s electronic medical record reflecting the plan of care as implemented by the patient, family, and multidisciplinary team. Documents information in a timely manner, according to hospital policy, to include the plan of care, accurate updates, teaching and the patients’ and family response to care. Leadership and Professional Development Demonstrates leadership skills such as the ability to motivate, educate, delegate, and mentor peers and other members of the healthcare team while effectively managing the care of patients and family members. Assumes responsibility and accountability for professional growth and development. Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues, and others. Participates in 75% of staff meetings and 75% of council meetings as appropriate. A MSN or DNP are not required but supersede the requirement for the BSN. YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: None required REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: The RN demonstrates the knowledge, abilities, and skills to provide age and culturally specific patient care and education. Job Description Facilitates the start-up of clinical projects in an acute care/inpatient/outpatient setting. Assists in project initiation, which includes educating physicians and hospital staff, implementing study protocol assignments, facilitating patient enrollment and follow-up. Assures protocol compliance, reports to the study Sponsor, and coordinates study participation with the patient’s clinical health plan. The goal is to complete each clinical trial with required enrollment, retention of subjects, and accurate data in accordance with FDA guidelines. The RN will need to have a willingness to learn innovative procedures such as the preparation and administration of stem cells, the use of investigational devices and the administration of investigational medications. Responsibilities Responsible for project management and implementation of study protocols. Assists in the initiation and maintenance of protocols. Strategically plans the study flow and creates outlines and source documents. Responsible for the training of research staff members, physicians and ancillary hospital healthcare professionals on study related procedures. Adjusts information aids, standing orders, study outlines when amendments to the protocols occur. Consents patients, verifies inclusion/exclusion criteria, facilitates testing and procedures, and coordinates patient visits to meet protocol requirements. Must be familiar with the policies and procedures of other hospital departments, i.e., OR, Cath Lab, EP Lab, ICU, ED, Cancer Center and telemetry units. Performs procedures and collects data in the ED, Cath Lab, EP Lab, ICU/step down area, physician office, O.R., Cancer Center and other required areas Assists physicians and ancillary hospital staff with procedures and data collection on sub-studies associated with project. Professionally represents the principal investigator and research center at Investigator Meetings and training sessions. Accurately maintains Case Report Forms (CRFs) and source documentation. Submits serious adverse events (SAEs) to the IRB and sponsor per established guidelines. Responsible for accountability during monitoring visits, sponsor audits, and FDA audits. Fulfills on call duties related to study procedures. Coordinates project management and patient activities to provide compliance. Serves as the contact for physicians, nurses and other ancillary hospital staff to assure that all research and related clinical needs are achieved. Verifies that patients are scheduled appropriately for follow up evaluations per protocol guidelines. Responsible for educating patients on the scientific objectives of the study as well as to the importance of compliance with follow-up. Maintain control of drug/device inventory and validate storage at the appropriate temperature. Guides the primary care physician in facilitating good protocol compliance and clinical patient care through awareness of protocol objectives and design. Makes recommendations on how to facilitate special or acute needs of patients. Assists the screening team with patient consenting and performs reconsenting as necessary. Fulfills IRB/FDA and protocol expectations. Facilitates and maintains high patient enrollment and participation in research protocols. Encourages new patient enrollment by identifying potential research patients, discussing the protocols with physicians and communicating this information to the screeners to facilitate the process. Works collaboratively with the physicians, hospital staff, patients, family, and study sponsors to implement research procedures to promote optimal outcomes. Alerts operational managers and physicians of possible patient withdrawal or continuance issues immediately in order to implement a plan that will encourage compliance with follow-up. Provides ongoing education to the patient and family members on the risks/benefits of the study in an effort to develop rapport and encourage compliance. Participates directly in patient care duties associated with projects. Requires case management skills to assist the patient with financial aid in order to obtain medication, medical care or transportation. Possesses a diverse knowledge base and is proficient in critical care nursing skills and procedures. Continual assessment of patients to evaluate the outcomes of the use of the investigational drug/device. Maintains accurate awareness of all clinical projects within the research center. Utilizes critical thinking skills when executing protocol procedures to maintain patient safety. Guides the physician in protocol compliance while making recommendations on how to facilitate special or acute needs of the patient. Performs other related duties as required or requested. Assures that the research center’s needs are recognized and cooperatively met and action is taken as required to obtain desired outcomes. Assists non-RN staff with any clinical tasks or decision making duties. On-call responsibilities as required that includes approximately one weekend every three months.
