1. Essential functions
a. Communicates pertinent abnormal assessment findings and patient responses to RN
b. Nutritional Management - assists with or provides a balanced dietary intake of foods and fluids
c. Pain management - Alleviates and reduces pain to a level of comfort acceptable to the patient

2. Physiological: Complex - Provides individualized, age-specific care that supports homeostatic regulation (under the direction of the Registered Nurse & within scope of practice).
. Airway management- facilitates patency of air passages
a. Fluid monitoring- collects & analyses patient data to regulate fluid balance
b. Intravenous therapy - administers & monitors intravenous fluids & medications
c. Medication Administration - Prepares, gives and evaluates the effectiveness of prescription and nonprescription drugs
d. Oxygen Therapy - Administers oxygen and monitors its effectiveness
e. Skin Surveillance - Collects and analyzes patient data to maintain skin and mucus membrane integrity
f. Wound Care- prevents wound complications & promotes wound healing
g. Surgical Preparation- provides care to a patient immediately prior to surgery & verifies required procedures/tests & documentation in the clinical record
h. Monitors blood glucose levels, as indicated

3. Behavioral - Provides age specific, individualized care that supports psychosocial functioning & facilitates lifestyle changes (under the direction of the Registered Nurse & within scope of practice). 5.6%
. Active Listening - Attends closely to and attaches significance to a patient's verbal and nonverbal message
a. Emotional Support - Provides reassurance, acceptance & encouragement during times of stress
b. Teaching: Disease Process - Assists the patient to understand information related a specific disease process
c. Collaborates with RN regarding patient's plan of care, teaching needs & documents in patient record

4. Organization of nursing care - Demonstrates ability to prioritize nursing care in collaboration with RN, based on individual patient assignment & unit activity.
. Prioritizes patient care based on patient's assessment findings
a. Mutualizes goals with patient/family & RN including teaching/discharge plans
b. Completes work/assignments within allotted time, reporting unfinished responsibilities

5. Safety - Provides age-specific, individualized care that supports protection from harm (under the direction of the Registered Nurse & within scope of practice).
. Recognizes life threatening emergencies & responds appropriately
a. Emergency Cart Checking - systematically reviews contents of emergency care at established time intervals
b. Fall Prevention - institutes special precautions with patient at risk for injury from falling
c. Infection Control - Minimizes the acquisition and transmission of infectious agents
d. Physical Restraints - applies, monitors & removes mechanical restraining devices or manual restraints which are used to limit physical mobility of patient
e. Surveillance: Safety - collects & analyses information about the patient and the environment for use in promoting and maintaining patient safety
f. Collects and reports cardiovascular, respiratory, and body temperature data

6. Family - Provides age specific , individualized care that supports the family unit
. Family Involvement- Facilitates family participation in the emotional & physical care of the patient

7. Health System - Provides care that supports effective use of the health care delivery system
. Assists RN with the discharge process
a. Transcribes and implements physician orders with RN verification
b. Documentation - records pertinent patient data in clinical record
c. Patient Rights Protection- protects the health care rights of a patient, especially a minor, incapacitated, or incompetent patient unable to make decisions
d. Processes patient charges for supplies and procedures

8. Continuing Education & Development - Acquires and maintains current knowledge and competency in nursing clinical practice
. Participates in ongoing educational activities related to practice area and clinical issues.
a. Acquires knowledge and skills appropriate to the specialty area and practice setting
b. Preceptor: Employee - Assists and supports a new or transferred employee through a planned orientation to a specific clinical area

9. Equipment and procedural skills - Demonstrates competency in performance of procedures and
. 12-Lead EKG acquisition
a. Foley Catheter insertion
b. Pulse Oximetry
c. Automatic BP device
d. Epidural
e. PCA
f. Pyxis Supply Station
g. Pyxis Medication Station
h. CCTV
i. Suicide Precautions
j. Seizure Precautions
k. Zoll Defibrillator operation
l. Admission of patient to telemetry
m. Telemetry monitoring
n. Arrhythmia interpretation
o. Traction Set-up DGS

Qualifications

Experience Minimum Required
• Over one month LPN in acute care, general hospital

Experience Preferred/Desired
• Over one year LPN in acute care, general hospital

Education Minimum Required
• LPN Program completion

Licensure and/or Certifications Required
• LPN
• AHA or ARC BLS
