Perinatal Educator Nursery - PRN

We are seeking a Perinatal Educator to work 12 hours per week - this position can be included with a nurse role on the unit as well!

General Position Summary:

This position will enhance professional practice through assessment and evaluation of clinical learning and development opportunities in the Women and Infant Services area. Develops, implements and evaluates staff development and learning solutions as it relates to clinical practices in Women and Infant Services. Will also partner and collaborate with others to establish and implement learning and development opportunities. Will assist the Director in providing leadership for staff by:

§Leading the professional nursing practice by using established standards of care.

§Promoting teamwork and professional staff development, providing for required education to maintain competencies and providing individual mentoring as needed

§Provide leadership and support to staff in the absence of the Director.

§Collaboration with physicians and staff on process improvement and patient safety activities.

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:

·Promoting teamwork and professional staff development, working with staff development/PI department- ensuring all required education is provided, competencies are maintained, and individual mentoring is provided as needed.

·Conducts chart reviews and provides coaching and mentoring to employees

·Reviews, tracks, or orders patient education materials.

·Develops and creates patient education materials.

·Ability to take initiative, problem solve and collaborate with other disciplines to improve processes.

·Supports implementation of hospital quality and safety goals, policy and procedures and activity designed to meet the requirements of regulatory and accrediting agencies and peer review organizations.

·Reviews and addresses incident reports as requested.

·Conducts research to support, and participates in implementation of evidence-based practice.

·Collaborates with NCL, ASC and other departments to meet patient care needs.

·Acts as a consultant and educator in program development and special projects as determined by the director.

·Coordinates preceptorship, orientation of staff and continued tracking of competency validation, education and licensure and certification currency for staff members and oversees the unit Nurse Residency/Nurse Externs.

·Mentors and supports activities that promote professional practice development

(including RNC, certifications, etc.).

·Develops, plans, and facilitates annual Women and Infant department competency plan

·Develops, plans, and facilitates department in-service offerings including physician education as requested.

·Coordinates and leads the planning and delivery of conversion education in the deployment of new unit specific technology and upgrades.

·Coordinates the development, delivery, and evaluation of clinical staff education related to the unit specific Clinical Information System.

oCoordinates the training provided during new employee orientation to support competency of new users in the use of information system.

oDevelops and delivers on-going user education and communication to maintain user competency.

·Maintains on-going user support structure.

oProvides opportunities for users to verbalize concern and suggest potential improvements related to the use of the information systems.

oEvaluates the impact the information systems have on daily user workflow.

oCoordinates work with users and the Information Technology department to resolve conflicts between workflow and the information systems.

oSupports staff to use technology in a manner which promotes maintenance of patient safety and confidentiality.

·Assists unit director with product evaluation and cost effective management of supplies and equipment

·Reviews, tracks and orders patient education materials.

·Assists with staff meetings as requested.

·Provides input into development and implementation of unit budget.

·Assists Director with application of Standards of Practice and quality improvement in the department

·Participates in interviews, hiring and staff performance evaluations and counseling as requested.

·Covers for unit Director as requested.

·Work as a staff RN as requested.

·Takes “on-call” status when required.

·Teach mandatory classes as requested.

·Conduct unit rounds for safety, infection control, and patient satisfaction as requested

·Displays proper etiquette and mannerisms that reflect the SHINE Behavior Standards.

·Promotes the Patient Safety Standards as a core value of the organization.

Secondary Functions:

·Participate in nursing and nurse residency program.

·Participate in organizational committees as requested.

·Participates in departmental and association wide informational meetings and in-services, including staff meetings, association wide forums, and seminars.

·Reviews department and association wide policies and procedures annually.

·All other duties as assigned.

Additional / Seasonal Responsibilities:

·Conducts/Organizes training and workshops for various competencies.

·Partially accountable for budgetary preparation/compliance under the direction of the unit director.

·Partially accountable for control of capital assets.

·Partially accountable for long-range operational planning.

·Partially accountable for long-range strategic planning.

Interpersonal Contacts:

Contacts:

·Are normally made with others both inside and outside the association.

·Are made with own department, staff, and supervisor as well as other departments and locations.

·Frequently contain confidential/sensitive information necessitating discretion at all times.

·Are frequently face-to-face with some telephone and e-mail contact.

·Include some contact with patients and physicians.

Specific Job Skills:

This position requires general nursing skills and knowledge of general office equipment (including the nurse call system, infant security system, telephone system, fax machine, and copy machine) as well as excellent computer, communication, critical thinking, problem solving, leadership, supervisory, and interpersonal skills.

This position requires knowledge of hospital equipment and programs, including the Hospital Information System. This position requires self-direction and self-motivation.

Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Physical Demands & Job Conditions:

Exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. The worker is subject to on-call status, contact with chemicals, contact with infectious fluids, heavy lifting, constant standing, and encounters with upset/disturbed individuals.

Physical motions include finger dexterity, standing, walking, stooping, crawling, talking, reaching, feeling, sitting, bending, kneeling, climbing, grasping, listening/hearing, handling, lifting up to 50-100 pounds, and repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and feet.

This is considered a safety sensitive position.

OSHA Exposure Category:

Involves exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
