This position is specifically for nursing students who are participating in the Advanced Student Experience (ASE) Program in their final semester of school. 

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Nurse Extern, you’ll be a valued part of the nursing team, gaining hands-on experience as you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. You’ll help deliver safe, compassionate care that improves patients’ lives while building the skills and confidence to take on more advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene
  • Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency
  • Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated
  • Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery
  • Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment
  • Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan

This position is specifically for nursing students who are participating in the Advanced Student Experience (ASE) Program in their final semester of school. 

What qualifications you will need:

  • Volunteer or experience in an acute care hospital setting – preferred 
  • Age specific knowledge of patient population in the specific department – preferred 
  • Currently enrolled and in good standing with an accredited school of Nursing 
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross - required 
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification – preferred

Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient’s growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies. 2. Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition. 3. Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served. 4. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 5. Ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. 6. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 7. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes. 8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff. 9. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills. 10. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Senior level student in good standing of a nationally accredited nursing program. Must be within 12-18 months of graduation. OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.
