Indiana University Health is looking for passionate, experienced nurses and to join our maternity team in a multidisciplinary flexible nurse role. This nurse provides care in both OB and SCN within the Maternity department at IU West. Location determined by highest need.
The Flex Nurse serves as a vital member of the Maternity team, embodying the mission, vision, and values of IU Health. This nurse reflects a commitment to excellence, integrity, and compassionate care, while adhering to the organization’s Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance standards, and all relevant policies, procedure and accreditation requirements. The responsibilities of this role require flexibility & clinical versatility to provide essential coverage across two inpatient settings determined by real-time staffing needs and patient acuity. This role requires the ability to float seamlessly between the units at the direction of the charge nurse. The flex nurse is a unit culture champion and a driver of cohesive unit relationships.
The Clinical Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of Indiana University Health, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. The registered professional clinical nurse (RN) is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of competent, evidence-based care along the care continuum, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The clinical nurse participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care, achieve outcomes and enhance operational efficiency. The nurse adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.
AVAILABLE SHIFTS: Full-Time and Part-Time | Days and Nights
Qualifications:
· Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
· Requires an active Registered Nurse license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN License.
· Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program. Exceptions: Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
- 2-3 years of Maternity experience strongly preferred.
· Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
· Requires NRP certification and competencies
Key Responsibilities
OB Unit Responsibilities:
· Function as Baby Nurse, including managing the 2-hour newborn recovery period for up to 2 infants simultaneously
· Participate in all deliveries with consideration of scope of practice
· Cover SCN as second nurse support for “All Call” and/or when deemed appropriate by Charge RN
· Assist with PCA duties when volume is high or PCA is unavailable
· Participate in team nursing in a postpartum assignment at the discretion of the Charge RN
· Assist OB nurses with heavy caseloads by answering call lights or circumcision support
SCN (Special Care Nursery) Responsibilities:
· Take appropriate assignment as a 3rd nurse as census dictates
· Cover the assignment needs of the SCN nurse off unit for delivery
· Participate in family centered care
· Perform standard newborn care (vitals, feeds, assessments, weights, lengths, OFCs, blood sugars, baths, linens)
· Assist SCN nurse with admission tasks
· Assist with unit tasks at the discretion of the SCN nurses (answer phones, stock carts, escort patients to elevator) in the absence of an appropriate assignment in SCN
Role Expectations:
· Reports to Charge RN who coordinates assignments, reassignments, and breaks. Leadership will decide placement of the Flex nurse when there are competing needs of both units.
· Must work 12-hour shifts.
· No mandatory call. Weekends and holidays at Leadership discretion.
