Patients medical diagnoses commonly include respiratory insufficiency or failure, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), hepatic failure, renal failure, sepsis, coma, hypertensive crisis, GI hemorrhage, endocrine/electrolyte imbalance and cancer/bone marrow transplant patients who are experiencing complications. Utilize the nursing process to provide primary care to critically ill medical patients/families who experience a wide variety of complex, multi-system health problems and to participate in health activities. Required Qualifications* Current Michigan RN license for all candidates that have passed the NCLEX. Three (3) or more years within the last five (5) years of Telemetry experience. ACLS certification is required, or within six (6) months of hire date. Responsibilities* The Pediatric Cardio-thoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTU) is a 20 bed tertiary care center receiving patients from state, regional, national and international referrals. PCTU specializes in the medical and surgical care of infants, children, adolescents and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Our goal is the provision of exemplary nursing care embracing a philosophy of family centered care empowering families to participate in the decision making and care of their children. The Pediatric Cardio-thoracic Intensive Care Unit nurse cares for patients in a technology intensive environment including ECMO, CRRT and VAD's. They are required to perform complex physiologic patient assessments in a high intensity environment for high acuity patients with rapidly changing status. Our patients undergo the most progressive surgical and catheterization interventions. Our nursing staff practice in close partnership with the cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and fellows providing individual support and education to families and patients throughout their intensive care unit admission. PCTU will be expanding by 9 beds in the spring of 2027 Required Qualifications* Current Michigan Registered Nurse License. 12-24 months of current pediatric acute care RN experience PALS certification is required (or within six (6) months of date of hire) or MUST be completed prior to end of probationary period . Responsibilities* 5D Surgical Intensive Care Unit: The SICU is a 20 bed adult intensive care unit caring for patients who have had major operations or those experiencing complications requiring extensive physiological monitoring. Typically this encompasses those patients with peripheral vascular diseases, cancer, hepatic, pancreatic or renal failure, cardiac and pulmonary disease. Often these patients present with multi-system failure requiring swan ganz monitoring, ventilator support, parenteral nutrition and fluid and electrolyte corrections. In addition, SICU receives adult liver transplants and is a major referral center for adult ECMO/Respiratory failure patients. This ICU also may receive overflow from the Trauma, Neuro, Medicine and Cardiac Intensive Care Units. SICU charge nurses participate as adult Rapid Response Providers through out the University Hospital.
