Overview
POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for providing nursing assisted care to patients involving standardized procedures requiring knowledge of specific patient conditions and treatments that include personal care, collection and reporting of vital signs, assisting with procedures, patient charting, and patient teaching under the supervision of Registered Nurses and other medical staff. Assists with patient re-positioning, transporting, dressing/undressing, and Activities of Daily Living in accordance with the Nursing Standards of Care and Unit policies. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Qualifications
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS
CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA)
Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- Successful completion of an accredited nursing assistant program and has successfully passed certification for nursing assistant
Certification/Licensure:
- Must have and maintain a current, active, and unrestricted Certification as a Nursing Assistant from the State of Arizona and must be in good standing with the Arizona Board of Nursing.
- Must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association
Experience:
Three months to one year of CNA experience or currently enrolled in a registered nursing program.
LICENSED NURSING ASSISTANT (LNA)
Education:
- High school diploma or GED
- Successful completion of an accredited nursing assistant program and has successfully passed licensure for nursing assistant

Physical:
This position is very active and requires prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds. Must have ability to occasionally lift, push or pull up to 100lbs. May require long hours and frequent weekend work when working inpatient units. Must have ability of far vision, near vision, depth perception, seeing fine details, hearing normal speech, hearing overhead pages and frequent telephone use. Must have ability of simple and firm grasping and fine manipulation of both hands, and frequent use of keyboards.
Mental:
Must be able to prioritize and use good judgment. Must be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted. Must communicate effectively and with tact in stressful situation. **CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT**
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for providing direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under supervision of the nursing staff and/or nursing department supervisor. Responsible for assisting nursing staff to create, maintain and provide a safe environment.
- Explain treatments under the direction of the nursing staff, observe patients, communicate observations or changes in patient’s condition to the appropriate healthcare team members and initiates emergency measures such as basic life.
- Shares in the responsibility of the maintenance of clinical records by charting of vital signs, height and weight; intake and output, pain scores, observations relative to patients’ condition and reaction to treatment, and assisted nursing care given.
- Transports patients using a variety of equipment including wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, or other mechanisms and assist in patient ambulation.
- Assisting with triage activities as directed by nursing staff and/or nursing supervisor.
- Supports in trauma situations and code blues within scope of practice.
- Assists in preparing a patient for procedures that include draping patients for examinations and treatments and remains with patients. May include performing duties such as holding instruments and adjusting lights.
- Handles multiple duties and tasks such as changing bed linens, performing activities of daily living, i.e. patient hygiene, bathing, repositioning, toileting, feeding, directing visitors, and answering the telephone.
- As directed by nursing staff, may collect or transport specimens, which include collection and proper labeling of laboratory specimens.
- Cleans, sterilizes, stores, prepares, and issues dressing packs, treatment trays, and other supplies.
- Follows stringent cleanliness regimes as to preclude the possibilities of infections and other diseases.
- Practices hand-off communication to the next CNA on shift, primary nurse, and/or to the charge nurse.
- Ensure proper and safe care of patient valuables and clothing, follows the organization’s policies and procedures.
- Maintains positive working relationships with staff and contributes to teamwork within the department. Adheres to TCRHCC mission, goals and policies.
- Assists in assembling and maintaining adequate supplies and shares responsibility for general upkeep of the department equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrates appropriate uses of equipment, materials, and supplies during assisted nursing care of patient.
- Attends all mandatory in-services and department meetings as required and scheduled.
- Performs other duties as assigned and float to other units.
- Assists with providing comfort measures, providing emotional support, and being a patient advocate.
- Performs 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECG’s) after competency is completed by department and kept on file.
- Document treatments, tasks, procedures performed in the patient’s electronic medical record.
- Ensure proper PPE is always worn while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
- Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
- Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee, and external customer satisfaction
- Assists with admission, discharge, and transfers of patients.
- Maintain patient safety at all times including providing fall precautions and observations as necessary.
- Must follow the Arizona State Board of Nursing Scope of Practice for the Certified Nursing Assistant.
