General Summary
- The Occupational Health & Wellness staff nurse aids in the operation of the department including, but not limited to, pre-employment screenings, immunizations, required initial and annual testing to meet regulatory requirements, educational programs, documentation of services provided and file maintenance, aiding with the workers compensation and employee leave programs, and surveillance reporting. The OH&W staff nurse demonstrates clinical competence relevant to the area or nursing practice while adhering to the ANA Code of Ethics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Interfaces with employees and volunteers regarding health issues and/or directing employees and volunteers to the appropriate parties within the department or organization
- Ensures organization is following all regulatory agency standards related to fit testing standards. Agencies include but are not limited to: Division of Hospital Licensing, OSHA, The Joint Commission (TJC), and Life Safety Codes
- Perform pre-employment screens to include urine drug screening according to manufacturer recommended procedure, documentation of health history, collection of records pertaining to immunization history, education and instruction to new employee regarding drug and alcohol policy, and other pre-employment topics relating to Occupational Health & Wellness
- Follow policy and procedure for performing measurement of manual vital signs with knowledge of abnormal findings, recording and reporting of such findings
- Follow policy and procedure for use/maintenance of quantitative fit testing machine (PortaCount). Demonstrates knowledge of complications and use of critical thinking skills in prevention and correction of problems related to operation and use of machine
- Demonstrates ability and competency, including communication skills and the ability to deal well with people, problem solve, ability to confront and resolve issues, motivate others, ability to plan and organize and direct activities of others
- Demonstrates understanding of the dynamics of health care adapting to change in a positive and professional manner
- Demonstrates ability and competency in assessment of work-related injury, use of critical thinking when additional treatment is required, and recognition of the need to stay within the scope of practice
- Communicates effectively through various mediums and documents information accurately, deals efficiently with a wide variety of individuals, works independently and prioritizes activities
- Assists in developing and recommending new policies and procedures and approaches to safety and loss prevention based on reports of general safety, employee incidents and other relevant information
- Assists in conducting surveillance on a periodic and regular basis to detect hazards and incorrect work practices and procedures within the organization
- Exhibits a high level of confidentiality
Education
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
Work Experience
- Three years of healthcare experience required.
Certification/License
- RN/LPN license in Missouri or compact state required. BLS through the American Heart Association required.
Mental/Physical Requirements
- Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 15 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
- Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.
