GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of a Nursing Director, the Nursing Supervisor provides supervision and leadership to staff in assigned nursing units. The position plans, directs and coordinates operational and personnel activities to ensure provision of high-quality patient care. The role includes collaboration and communication, utilizing participative decision-making when appropriate. The position is responsible for promoting ongoing development of staff and maintaining a professional environment. This position is additionally responsible for ongoing compliance monitoring of Medical Surgical related Process Improvement projects.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
Provides direct supervision to Medical Surgical department and staff. Investigates and resolves patient and staff complaints within the assigned units. Ensures performance improvement activities are completed in collaboration with Administrator. Monitors staff and demonstrates clear expectation of accountability based on job descriptions and department needs. Monitors staffing and patient census promoting teamwork, communication and patient flow within BMC. Collaborates with other departments to ensure coordinated patient care and team environment is maintained. Monitors activities for quality of procedures and performance of staff. Participates and makes recommendations for interviewing, hiring, orientation, evaluation and personnel management. Reviews and revises department policies and procedures. Works collaboratively to coordinate regular department meetings and maintenance of meeting minutes. Maintains clinical competency to provide leadership for staff. Communicates professionally, clearly, concisely, and accurately; creating a working climate that promotes growth, team spirit and job satisfaction of personnel. Compiles work schedules for staff and processes KRONOS timecards as assigned. Assists with budget monitoring and preparation as needed. Ensures compliance with regulatory and accrediting guidelines and agencies’ policies. Responds to consultative needs of the department. Evaluates the effectiveness of the care given by interdisciplinary care team, identifies challenges and counsels team members on solutions. Assists in development and implementation of IT systems and changes in collaboration with IT. Maintains ability to complete direct patient care as needed. Completes other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Maintains professional communication with all staff, patients and customers to provide positive service excellence. Consistently demonstrates willingness and ability to function as clinical supervisor and support BMC Mission, Vision and Values. Helps facilitates designated departmental meetings as needed and “work projects” to develop strategies for continued quality improvement within designated time frame. Staff are meeting expectations of accountability based on individual job descriptions and organization policies and procedures Schedules and KRONOS are completed and posted within expected timelines. Department expenses are maintained with established budget. Staff use supplies, time and resources in a safe and fiscally responsible manner. Annual performance appraisals are completed in a timely manner and staff complete mandatory training within designated time frame. Reports are completed within expected timelines. Completes required annual mandatory education within defined time frame. Departments maintain productive outcomes. Maintains competence in clinical skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate from accredited school of nursing. Iowa Registered Nurse license. BSN. Two-plus years RN experience with focus in related setting. Demonstrated leadership abilities. Certification in BLS. Advanced computer experience. Proficiency in Word and Excel Strong written and verbal communication skills.
