Director, Inpatient Behavioral Health-Full Time

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the AVP of Nursing, this role is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the program across clinical care, unit operations, and utilization management. The position provides leadership in establishing and achieving high standards of quality patient care and oversees the development, implementation, and growth of treatment plans, operations, and services. Responsibilities include setting short- and long-term goals, objectives, and strategies; ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory and accrediting requirements; managing clinical, human, and financial resources; and maintaining fiscal accountability. This role provides strong leadership through effective communication, motivation, and team building, with a focus on patient experience and satisfaction. Additionally, the position supports and facilitates nurse competence in the Behavioral Health Nurse role, including adherence to scope of practice and professional standards for the inpatient behavioral health unit.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

1.   Ensures nursing practice within the department complies with current minimum standards and applicable Iowa laws governing the practice of nursing.

2.   Ensures full compliance with all applicable regulatory and accrediting bodies.

3.   Defines, monitors, and evaluates nursing standards for behavioral health patient care and ensures technical and clinical compliance by unit staff.

4.   Maintains departmental standards, policies, and procedures, and establishes processes to support their development, interpretation, implementation, and ongoing evaluation.

5.   Collaborates with patients, physicians, and interdisciplinary staff to develop and implement unit goals for quality, customer service, and cost that align with the mission and core services of Broadlawns Medical Center.

6.   Ensures patient care services and programming are provided consistently seven days a week.

7.   Collaborates with appropriate departments throughout all stages of the budget process (including capital requests, FTEs, equipment, and supplies) to support a cost-effective patient care unit.

8.   Recommends an adequate number of qualified and competent personnel to meet patient care and service needs.

9.   Determines the qualifications and competence of department personnel providing patient care, including their ability to meet patients’ age-related, physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs.

10.   Promotes effective communication and maintains liaison relationships within the Department of Psychiatry to support collaborative and harmonious operations.

11.   Interviews and hires departmental employees in accordance with organizational policies.

12.   Assists in the development and implementation of strategies to support effective recruitment, retention, and development of a diverse unit team.

13.   Creates opportunities for staff to apply training and demonstrate learning in the work environment.

14.   Communicates and models the values and mission of the Medical Center through staff orientation, development, and performance evaluation processes.

15.   Participates in ongoing training, education, and professional development to enhance individual knowledge, performance, and organizational learning.

16.   Actively participates in committees and task forces as assigned.

17.   Maintains membership in relevant professional organizations.

18.   Recommends space and resource needs to support departmental operations.

19.   Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.   Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing with the Iowa Board of Nursing.

2.   Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

3. Master's degree in nursing, healthcare management, business administration or closely related field (within two years).

4.   Minimum of two years of behavioral health or related clinical nursing experience.

5.   Minimum of five years of supervisory or leadership experience.

6.   Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to establish and maintain positive professional relationships at all organizational levels.

7.   Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

8.   Demonstrated leadership competence, including decision-making, delegation, and team development skills.

9.   Ability to apply innovative and effective problem-solving approaches.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.   Experience in chemical dependency nursing.

2.   Experience in community behavioral health nursing.

3.   Psychiatric–Mental Health Nursing certification (PMHN or PMH-BC).
