Position Summary:
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the School-Based Health Clinic provides primary healthcare
services to students, addressing acute and chronic medical conditions, preventive care, and health
education. The NP works independently and collaboratively with other healthcare providers,
school staff, and parents to deliver high-quality, accessible care in a school setting. The NP will
conduct physical assessments, diagnose and treat common illnesses, prescribe medications, and
ensure that student's health needs are met in a safe and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Primary Care and Medical Assessments:
o Provide comprehensive healthcare services, including the assessment, diagnosis,
and treatment of acute and chronic health conditions for students.
o Perform physical exams, conduct health screenings, and evaluate students'
medical histories.
o Diagnose and treat common childhood illnesses, injuries, and conditions such as
colds, asthma, allergies, ear infections, and minor injuries.
o Prescribe medications and other treatments in accordance with state laws and
school district policies.
o Order and interpret lab tests and other diagnostic procedures as needed.

2. Health Promotion and Education:

o Provide health education to students and staff on topics such as nutrition, hygiene,
sexual health, mental health, substance abuse prevention, and other wellness-
related issues.
o Conduct preventive health services, including immunizations, screenings, and
wellness exams.
o Offer guidance and counseling on health concerns, healthy lifestyle choices, and
coping strategies for managing stress, mental health, or behavioral issues.

3. Collaborative Care and Case Management:

o Collaborate with the school's healthcare team, including Registered Nurses
(RNs), counselors, and school administrators, to coordinate care for students with
medical or behavioral needs.
o Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student health
concerns, treatment plans, and follow-up care.
o Provide referrals to specialists or external healthcare providers when necessary
and follow up to ensure continuity of care.

4. Emergency Care and Response:

o Provide immediate care for medical emergencies, including first aid, CPR, and
other life-saving measures as needed.
o Assess emergency situations and determine appropriate interventions or referrals
for further care.
o Ensure that appropriate medical supplies and equipment are available for
emergency care.

5. Documentation and Compliance:

o Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date medical records for all students,
documenting assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes.
o Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including HIPAA, school
policies, and guidelines for school-based health clinics.
o Stay current with developments in healthcare, including best practices, new
treatments, and changes in regulations that affect school-based health services.

6. School Health Policy Development:

o Assist in the development and implementation of school health policies and
procedures, including those related to emergency response, disease prevention,
and chronic condition management.
o Provide input and recommendations for improving the school's health services
and promoting a healthy school environment.

Qualifications:

1. Education and Licensure:
o Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited Nurse Practitioner
program.
o Current, valid Nurse Practitioner license in the state of Illinois
o Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
(PNP) preferred.
o Current CPR, First Aid, and ACLS certifications.

2. Experience:

o Experience as a Nurse Practitioner, with a background in pediatric care, primary
care, or school-based health services preferred.
o Experience diagnosing and treating common illnesses, managing chronic
conditions, and providing preventive health care.
o Familiarity with the unique healthcare needs of children and adolescents in a
school setting.

3. Skills and Abilities:

o Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills to evaluate, treat, and manage a
range of medical conditions.
o Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact effectively with
students, parents, school staff, and other healthcare providers.
o Knowledge of school health regulations, immunization requirements, and
confidentiality laws (HIPAA).
o Ability to work independently and make clinical decisions in a school-based
setting.

Additional Information:

This position may involve periodic participation in district-wide health initiatives or school
health programs, such as flu clinics, wellness events, or emergency response training. The Nurse
Practitioner will be expected to stay updated with relevant health policies, medical practices, and
education techniques related to school health services.
