CMA Outpatient Full-time
The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Neurology is looking to hire a Medical Assistant II under direct supervision of LIP (licensed independent practitioner), RN (registered nurse), NM/ANM (nurse manager/assistant nurse manager) or other licensed designee, that will function as a member of the ambulatory patient care team. This individual will perform technical, patient care and related clerical functions in an ambulatory setting by coordinating all elements of the patient visit.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic, interacting with patients, families, nursing staff and LIP’s to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
  • Assists in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments according to patient condition and age, including but not limited to: patient history and screenings, vital signs, medication history, allergies and immunizations.
  • Provides information to patients using pre-printed and pre-approved documents.
  • Collects specimens for routine and specialized testing such as urinalysis and venipuncture using proper collection techniques and special processes as defined by specific specimen collection requirements.
  • Performs routine tests and procedures, including POC tests, under the direction of the LIP or per protocol.
  • Administers routine oral, rectal or injectable medications and vaccinations within the scope of practice and per established protocols. Medication can only be administered by certified medical assistants or medical assistants who have completed a formal accredited training program.
  • Identifies medication renewal needs during the outpatient visit and communicates to the LIP.
  • Coordinates prescription renewal process in conjunction with the LIP post outpatient visit.
  • Identifies vaccination needs for specific patient populations and administers per protocol.
  • Documents care given and patient history in electronic medical record including clinic forms.
  • Manages internal and external medical records to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for the patient appointments. Medical records include but are not limited to the following: radiology film, media on-line, and paper medical record documents. This is managed by: loading, scanning, requesting and compiling.
  • Assists in obtaining preauthorization's and prior authorizations.
  • Performs check in functions.
  • Performs cash collection for co-payments and cash box reconciliation.
  • Distributes parking stickers per policy.
  • Receives incoming calls and routes to appropriate nurse/provider/service.
  • Makes outgoing and reminder calls to patients.
  • Schedules appointments on as needed.
  • Coordinates patient care with other departments.
  • Assists with preparation for upcoming clinics.
  • Completes on-line and in-service education programs annually and as required/offered.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings.
  • Treats matters with confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
  • Demonstrates consideration and respect for patients, families, and co-workers at all times.
  • Reports unusual incidents, complaints or concerns to LIP, nurse manager or designee as appropriate. Files PSN reports to record unusual events.
  • Transports patients safely with appropriate hand-off communication.
  • Utilizes procedures, skills and techniques to prevent cross-contamination and transmission of infection.
  • Anticipates, plans and responds to the needs of the healthcare team.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families and team members to enhance the operation of the clinic.
  • Assists staff during emergencies within the scope of capabilities and follows standard precautions.
  • Maintains required skills in CPR and emergency care through participation in review sessions.
  • Completes assignment, seeks assistance when necessary and assumes responsibility for special duties or tasks assigned.
  • Alters work schedule to meet clinic/patient needs.
  • Assumes responsibility for neatness and cleanliness of clinic.
  • Cleans and returns equipment to the proper location. Checks to ensure equipment is maintained by Bioengineering according to expiration date on equipment.
  • Obtains and assembles supplies and equipment for procedures as directed.
  • Transports specimens and supplies.
  • Perform other projects or tasks as assigned.
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
  • Adheres to UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, including: follows established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors and meeting the standards of personal appearance, attendance and punctuality.
  • Assists with maintaining unit/clinic to accreditation standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant or completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant Program, or
  • Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.
