Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts. The Virginia Department of Health Pittsylvania-Danville Health District is seeking a qualified candidate for a Certified Nurse Practitioner Senior role.

For exceptionally, highly qualified candidates, a one-time sign-on bonus of up to $5,000 and/or up to 40 hours of annual leave may be awarded.

The Certified Nurse Practitioner Senior performs patient care as a nurse practitioner with limited or no on-site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, and develop and implement care plans including the administration of medication and case management. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Practitioner in Virginia.

This position will be based at the Danville Health Department servicing the Pittsylvania and Danville area but will also support the Southside Health District locations - Halifax, Mecklenburg, and Brunswick counties.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. May be required by VDH to adjust work hours, location, and job duties and participate in training to meet public health business needs, including emergencies. If this position is designated as a mobile worker, this includes both working in the field and teleworking at an alternate location when not in the field or during an emergency closing. You may be required to periodically come into your assigned office to attend meetings or training.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year’s seasonal influenza vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications

Typical Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs):

• Licensure as a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Practitioner in Virginia required.

• Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology

• Ability to perform and interpret physical assessments, obtain medical history, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses and plan of care and provide health education to clients

• Ability to develop patient management plans; excellent clinical judgement with ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation

• Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, patients and the public; ability to participate in educational and professional programs

• CPR/BLS certification
