Harborview Medical Center’s (HMC) Pediatrics clinic in the University District of Seattle has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time PMHNP, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner; or PA-C, Physician Assistant with psych experience.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Part-time, 10 hours per week
  • Two half days per week

Department Description

Harborview’s Youth Clinic provides primary care, acute care, reproductive healthcare, and mental health services to teens and young adults (12-26 years old) who are unstably housed or experiencing homelessness and seeking services at one of 2 partner social service agencies. Clinic facilities are basic, and providers are routinely called upon to use clinical acumen and creativity to assess and meet client needs. The staff include a seasoned program manager and a mental health clinician. Child & adolescent psychiatric consultation is available as needed. And the clinic works closely with other units at Harborview to access laboratory testing, pharmacy, billing and documentation services.

Harborview is committed to ending youth homelessness and closing paths to chronic adult homelessness. Working with community partners, we will address physical and mental health challenges to allow unhoused youth to engage with education, employment, and stable shelter.

This is a position for an experienced advanced practice provider ready to work with some of the most marginalized and resilient young people in our community. Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site psychiatric services for street-involved adolescents and young adults in the University District
  • Deliver episodic psychiatric evaluation, diagnostic clarification, and short-term medication management while clients work toward stable housing and connection to ongoing behavioral health services
  • Function independently and in collaboration with the care team to assess, diagnose, and manage a wide variety of pediatric conditions
  • Requires comfort practicing independently in a resource-limited, safety-net clinical environment
  • Conduct psychiatric assessments and diagnostic clarification for youth and young adults
  • Provide short-term and episodic medication management, including initiation, titration, and monitoring of common psychiatric medications
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary clinic staff, including medical providers, social workers, and case managers
  • Support care transitions and referrals to community mental health and supportive services
  • Practice using trauma-informed, harm-reduction, and youth-centered care principles
  • Complete clinical documentation in accordance with UW Medicine policies and grant requirements

Requirements

  • Licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or Physician Assistant with psychiatric experience
  • Valid Washington State ARNP or PA-C license
  • National certification (AANP/ANCC or NCCPA)
  • DEA registration and hospital credentialing as required
  • Demonstrated ability to practice independently
  • Experience managing common psychiatric conditions in outpatient or community settings
  • Experience working with adolescents and/or young adult

NP will also be responsible for at least 1-3 discharges a day of any patients deemed appropriate for discharge or other circumstances i.e. parent or patient withdrawing from treatment and will be responsible for communicating the stature of discharge i.e. voluntary discharge, discharge against medical advice or administrative discharge. NP will be responsible for following up on all the remainder of their patients on their case load for the day and document the progress updates. All efforts to be made by NPs to reach out and communicate with families, care givers and outpatient teams at the start and during the treatment course up until discharge. NP will put in admission orders or review and make corrections as per their evaluations, will order baseline and follow up laboratory blood work as deemed necessary and follow up on reports and communicate with patient and family. NPs are expected to attend daily team rounding meetings on the unit in person Mon-Fri. NP’s will provide at least 1 to 2 nights of call coverage on pager depending on the weekend that they may be on call. NP’s will provide in person 24 coverage on Sat and Sun at least once every 5th week and will have the same responsibilities however the case load on the weekend will be a maximum of 12-13 patients and the rest of expectations for admissions, progress follow ups and discharges will remain the same as on weekdays. NP’s will be responsible for collaborating with ancillary staff members involved in their patients care ie nursing, social workers and mental health technicians. NP’s will be responsible for keeping up with all licensure requirements and update on their workday profile. All annual mandatory trainings as directed by the system will have to be maintained and reported to MD. NP will be responsible for providing PTO requests at least 2-4 weeks in advance to Medical Director for approval and be responsible for formal request on UKG.
