BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB

A qualified, registered professional nurse who is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and controlling the nursing operation of the unit to maintain the highest level of care 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Minimum Work Experience: 2-3 years experience pediatric nursing required; management experience requried.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists the Director in development, implementation, and evaluation of ongoing service programs that ensure quality nursing, and patient care programs, consistent with the hospital mission.
  • Monitors/maintains unit compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and hospital policy for patient services and environmental and personnel safety.
  • Monitors the staff’s understanding of established emergency, infection control, and universal precautions procedures as evidenced by CQI reports, incident follow ups, staff meeting minutes, and direct observation by the divisional director/designee.
  • Accurately identifies real/potential problems affecting the service and implements solutions with follow-through and communication.
  • Improves service continually, ensuring is consistent with the patient care beliefs and shared management philosophy of the department.
  • Collaborates with the department of education and training to plan for orientation of new personnel and unit specific education/inservice as documented.
  • Responsible for effective communication horizontally and vertically within the organization.
  • Is responsible for the department’s operational excellence; ensures that the department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional standards.
  • Ensures patient safety practices and improvements related to National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG), never events, and best practices in pediatrics are upheld and promoted within the department/unit/area.
  • Serves as the designated CBISA reporter for the department. Reports benefit activities, communicates benefit stories, calculates event detail and enters information into Lyon Software (CBISA) program. Completes reports monthly with an understanding that all fiscal year entries be completed no later than August 1 of the next fiscal year.
  • Acts as a resource and liaison to medical and Hospital staff, students, patients, and families. Utilizes appropriate resources within the institution to provide consultation, education, technical, or informational services as needed for self, staff, and patients. Meets with other nurse managers to problem solve and plan staffing changes.
  • Develops collaborative working relationships with department heads, physicians, and other resources/support personnel who provide services to the unit and patients, as evidenced by observation.
  • Initiates communication to ensure problems are resolved and special needs are met, as evidenced by, but not limited to, employee communication forms and incident report and patient survey response follow-ups.
  • Follows established communication mechanism established to provide information to administrative clinical coordinators covering the unit off shifts.
  • Possesses a continuous learning attitude for their own professional development, seeking out classes, projects and other resources to assist them in growing. Acquires and maintains unit specific competency requirements.
  • Encourages staff development and growth, keeping future needs of the department and organization in mind as well as the employee’s strengths and interests. Identifies and ensures staff compliance to unit specific competencies.
  • Manages human resources to assure quality services and promote positive employee relations.
  • Fosters mature professional relationships with fellow employees in a courteous, friendly manner, as measured by management observation and peer input.
  • Willingly assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.
  • Utilizes hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably.
  • Manages financial resources of the department and ensures proper utilization of the organization’s financial resources.
  • Participates in the budget process by recommending a staffing plan and personnel mix to service the unit.
  • Projects and recommends capital equipment needs for the unit and provides back-up documentation and justification.
  • Interprets budget to staff and enlists their cooperation in cost containment, as evidenced by monthly financial responsibility reports and staff minutes.

  • Heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling is required up to 50 lbs occasionally, 20-30 lbs frequently, and 10lbs constantly to move objects of up to 150 lbs. Sudden emergency situations have the potential for exposure to lifting or moving of up to 150 lbs. Frequent bending, walking, sitting squatting, reaching, and standing are required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
