Clinic Nurse-Oncology
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the Clinic Manager and the Assistant Vice President of Outpatient Clinics, the RN of Oncology Infusion and Oncology Clinic will provide patient support and telephone nursing support for patients with the diagnosis of cancer in various settings; utilizes an empathetic and caring approach to patients whose diagnosis and treatment are often complex. The RN functions with autonomy in clinical nursing practice within the guidelines established by the Iowa Board of Nursing and Broadlawns Medical Center. The RN is responsible for assisting providers in providing timely patient visits, communications, and the processing of outpatient medication refill requests.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works collaboratively with providers and other departments to ensure coordinated and timely patient care and team environment is maintained.
- Coordinates care for all appropriate patients throughout the continuum of care from diagnosis through survivorship.
- Administers chemotherapy, conducts patient teaching, and manages illness and treatment related symptoms for all stages of cancer, hematologic problems and chronic pain.
- Works collaboratively with supervisors to attend and participate in department meetings.
- Precepts staff on clinical skills and orientation materials as assigned.
- Addresses phone calls from patients and other individuals related to medications/treatments including potential side effectives or adverse reactions.
- Recognizes potentially dangerous symptoms of patients that require immediate referral to the provider or emergency services.
- Provides patient notification and education at the direction of the provider regarding results of various laboratory and other test results and documents actions in the medical record.
- Anticipates needs of the patient based upon assessment findings.
- Completes all documentation and medical records accurately and timely.
- Escorts clinic patient to exam room as assigned by supervisor.
- Completes rounds on inpatient floors with oncologist and coordinates with interdisciplinary team. Creates infusion room order templates per provider direction in collaboration with pharmacy and therapeutics committee.
- Provides and monitors infusions.
- Assists with patient financial support/grant applications, prior authorization care for services and medication, drug product replacement, FMLA and disability paperwork, and tracking and co-pay assistance.
- Performs department performance improvement audits/measurements and goal setting.
- Serves as an advocate for the patient and/or their support system.
- Assists with reviewing, developing, and updating community resources and educational materials for patients.
- Participates in effective fiscal management of the clinic, such as connecting patients with financial counselors, assisting patients with patient assistance programs, assisting with good faith estimates, etc.
- Completes other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Maintains professional communication with all staff, patients and customers to provide positive service excellence. Demonstrates consistently willingness and ability to function as clinical nurse and support BMC Mission, Vision and Values. Demonstrates competence in computer applications. Provides clinical patient care support with positive customer service and patient-centered care in the assigned clinic with timely feedback to patients. Ensures compliance with regulatory and accrediting guidelines and agencies’ policies. Assists patients through infusions in a calm and caring manner. Completes required annual mandatory education within defined time frame. Demonstrates clinical and critical thinking skills and good judgment in decision making. Maintains skills, knowledge and abilities concerning current innovations in testing and pharmacology. Demonstrates awareness and application of all policies and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Current RN license recognized by the State of Iowa Board of Nursing.
- Obtain and maintain Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Certification from ONS for all RN’s working in the oncology infusion room within 12 months of hire.
- Two years of RN experience.
- Certification in BLS.
- Advanced computer experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Oncology research qualified/experience in cancer clinical trials.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
- OCN national certification within a year of hire.
- One year of outpatient clinic experience.
- Bilingual.
- Meditech experience.
