As a Med Technologist at MercyOne, you will act as technical information resource for MercyOne Des Moines Laboratory. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or results and uses knowledge, critical thinking skills, and judgment to troubleshoot and resolve them. May be assigned to assume the duties of a charge technologist. Performs tasks and procedures specific to assigned department with minimal supervision.

Uses educational and technical expertise to troubleshoot issues related to specimen quality, instrument/method performance and analytical interferences to ensure patient results match clinical status. Assists and supports quality management systems and performance improvement initiatives.
Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines and records. Maintains supply inventories.
Trains new employees and acts as preceptor for laboratory students.
Operates laboratory information systems, personal computers, and instrument-related computer software.
Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.

Schedule: PRN (primarily weekend shifts)

General Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or in Chemistry, Biology or related field.
One-year clinical internship in a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited clinical laboratory science program or approved alternate career path that meets certification eligibility requirements.
Certification in one of the following:
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).
A person may be hired into this position if he/she has completed the educational requirements and is eligible for the certification exam. The exam must be successfully completed within six (6) months of hire.
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training for child and dependent adult abuse within three (3) months of hire.

Count and sign on approved form, all narcotics with approved personnel before accepting medication keys. Contact a supervisor immediately with discrepancies. Notify supervisor when supply is less than 2 days and medicine hasn’t been received. Responsible for receiving and verifying all medicine received is accurate according to pharmacy label and MAR. Responsible for dating all appropriate vials or bottles at time of initial opening and following pharmacy protocol on length of time they can be used. Responsible for verifying all current MARs are compared to new MARs at change over time and notifying the supervisor of any discrepancies. Responsible for removing all discontinued medication from med cart and giving it to the supervisor. Provide personal care to residents to include, but not limited to, bathing, skin care, oral hygiene, grooming, dressing, incontinence care, and eating, etc. Provide general nursing care to include, but not limited to, vital signs, temperatures, blood pressure, and weights. Document appropriate information in the daily log as required and notify supervisor of all concerns. Answer calls and assist residents with needs as assigned. Responsible for daily cleaning of all medicine carts at end of shift and restocking as needed. Responsible for weekly deep cleaning of all med carts. Attend and participate in staff training and in-services. Must maintain accurate records to include preparation of all medical charts for new admissions and readmissions and ensures medical record is complete within forty-eight (48) hours as Policy and Procedure (P&P) and regulatory guidelines.
