Nurse Manager II - Med/Surg Tappahannock - Days

Nestled along the scenic Rappahannock River, Tappahannock Hospital maintains a high standard of care for a rural area. Our essential departments, including Emergency, Critical Care, Operating Room, and Acute Care Units, position us as a crucial healthcare resource for our area.

The Acute Care Unit at Tappahannock treats medical/surgical patients with a multitude of acute medical conditions, such as, diabetes, congestive heart failure, respiratory, pain management, surgical procedures, GI, and orthopedic. The unit is capable of offering telemetry monitoring when needed. The unit is structured with 24 private rooms and 6 rooms can be converted to semi-private to allow for 30 patients, three of these rooms have negative pressure. Skill mix includes RNs, LPNs, Patient Care Techs, and Unit Secretaries. There is one full time Nurse Director and one full-time Clinical Coordinator managing both Acute Care Unit and ICU. Staffing is based on patient census, acuity and adjusted accordingly per shift. Initial nursing data base assessments are completed within 24 hours of admission and reassessment minimum standards are every 12 hours or by adherence to appropriate nursing policies. 

The Nurse Manager II job ensures that excellent patient care is provided by a nursing staff of sufficient number and competency to meet patient needs. Care is delivered in an environment that is healthy, healing and respectful to all patients, visitors and staff.

The Nurse Manager II job provides quality customer service to patients of all ages, their families, visitors, medical staff, clinicians and co-workers, ensuring that everyone will be treated courteously, quickly and with respect. This role establishes and maintains an environmental control plan, coordinate materials management for the department, assist in monitoring clinic activities.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current RN Licensure in Virginia AHA BLS Certification or equivalent

Experience REQUIRED:
5 years of relevant clinical experience with 2 of those years of progressive leadership and/or supervisory/management experience

Experience PREFERRED:
Experience in academic medical center environment

Education/training REQUIRED:   

Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Must be enrolled in a Master’s degree program at the time of application and must be complete within 36 months of hire.  

Special consideration will be given for applicants enrolled in baccalaureate to doctoral programs who will not attain a Master’s degree and may require longer than 36 months to complete the terminal degree.   
If the Master’s degree is not in nursing then it is required to have a BSN from an accredited school.

Independent action(s) required:
All day-to-day operations of the unit are handled independently.
Advice and guidance are sought from the Director on an as needed situational basis and when there is a major impact on: activity outside the unit.
Actions that are taken without prior approval include daily operational functions and leadership, of staff.
With Guidance of Supervisor; advice and guidance are sought for termination of employees, handling employee grievances, review of annual unit goals and budget, approval on unit guidelines and procedures and review of staff annual performance evaluations.

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):
All employees of the nursing unit report to this position and with responsibility of 50 or more FTEs; however, supervisory responsibilities may be delegated as appropriate.

Additional position requirements:
Requires 24/7 visibility to enhance staff communication and monitor staff effectiveness.

Identifies and participates in activities to appropriately improve patient safety, patient throughput, reduce length of stay and prevent readmission. Actively participates and assists in the selection, development and retention of associates and serves as a coach and resource to peers, staff and other healthcare team members; adds positively to creating and sustaining a healthy work environment. Demonstrates effective medication administration provided to patients as evidenced by Preceptor Observation Tool, Skills Fair Demonstration, and Clinical Practice. Demonstrates appropriate delegation and supervision of patient care activities within the healthcare setting. Contributes to the patient experience as evidenced by positive patient satisfaction scores and HCAHPs scores for department/medical center and/or written compliments by patients/others as well as consistent performance of purposeful hourly rounding and bedside shift report. Work Experience MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Associate’s degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma. Work Experience: None Licensure: RN Licensure in the State of Florida or endorsement. Certification: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintained. Must obtain other certification(s) as required by specific unit. Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: Must be able to speak / understand written and verbal instructions in the English language. Must meet unit specific care requirements. Must have ability to work in often stressful environment with patients / families at various ages and levels of understanding. Must have ability to concentrate on multiple priority activities. Must have ability to respond appropriately to life threatening situations. Must have critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Demonstrates dependability, reliability and flexibility. Must have highly developed verbal and non-verbal communication skills. PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS Work Experience: Two (2) years of relevant clinical experience. Certification: National certification in relevant specialty. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Physically agile; may require walking, standing, running, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, or crouching frequently. May occasionally include lifting or moving objects up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance. May require moving in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces, including reaching out and above shoulders, or overhead. May lift, turn, pull, push, or ambulate people and/or equipment with or without assistance up to 90% of the assigned shift. May be exposed to inside and outside environments with varied temperatures, air quality, lighting, and/or low to loud noise. May require working with biohazards such as blood/body fluids and airborne particles following OSHA and CDC guidelines. Communicating with others to exchange information.
