Job Description

General Summary:

The Medical Assistant is responsible for daily clinical work in the outpatient/primary care setting in accordance with the Ambulatory Medical Assistant Scope of Practice. Assists Physicians and other staff under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Advanced Practice Nurse and/or Physician.

Essential Job Functions:

•   Depending on location, performs phlebotomy and specimen processing as directed by delegating provider.
•   Administers, including but not limited to, intramuscular injections, subcutaneous injections, intradermal skin testing, topical medications, ophthalmic drops and nasal spray.
•   Depending on location, performs ECGs, places Holter monitors and downloads telemetry data.
•   Works in conjunction with other staff to maximize clinic flow.
•   Intervenes appropriately in emergency situations.
•   Documents data and changes in the Electronic Medical Record.
•   Provides assistance and or back up support for administrative tasks including but not limited to scheduling patient visits and performing basic “check-in, check out” activities.
•   Obtains measurements, patient history and other intake activities.
•   Stocks and maintains the clinic area including ordering of supplies as needed.
•   Demonstrates knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization if required as part of the responsibilities of the role.
•   Depending on location, directs High Level Disinfection scope cleaning in accordance with defined HLD processes.
•   Completes trainings and education including but not limited to Healthcare Provider CPR.
•   Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•   High school diploma required.
•   Successful completion of a formal Medical Assistant program.
•   Possesses 0 – 3 years of relevant clinical experience.
•   Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) (AAMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred but not required.
•   Some college, preferred.
•   Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
•   Excellent communication/listening skills. Substantial interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with pediatric patients, families, physicians, nursing and other allied health and medical center personnel.

Position Summary This position functions under the direction of the Assistant Director, Advanced Practice Nurse, and charge nurse; performing clinical, clerical and escort duties as instructed Duties & Responsibilities Performs direct patient care tasks such as the following: • Responds to patient telephone inquiries giving factual information according to the nature of the question; secures patient information about illness and health problems • Greets patient, checks appointment, updates patient information, demographics and insurance cards, and ensures the patient’s medical records, including electronic records, are available to the physicians, nurse practitioners, or other healthcare providers • Escorts or arranges to have patient escorted to examination or treatment room • Completes and records patients’ blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, and other data on appropriate medical records including electronic records • Discusses with the patient the reason for his/her visit and records symptoms on the medical records including electronic records • Administers basic tests, such as audio, visual, or lung stress tests • Instructs the patient in certain aspects of health care as directed by the physicians, nurse practitioners, or other healthcare providers • Relays information to the patient regarding preparation for various types of exams and the location of laboratories, pharmacy, and other treatment areas • Assists physicians, nurse practitioners, or other healthcare providers with conducting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, e.g., drapes patient for exams and treatments, sets up treatment tray to be used in an examination, holds and hands various instruments to the doctor, adjusts lights or treatment tables, procures proper IUD for patient insertion, applies or removes simple bandages or dressings, and removes stitches and/or staples after the site has been inspected by a physician, nurse practitioner, other healthcare providers or a clinic nurse.
