Department Overview

This position provides Intraoperative care to all ophthalmology surgical patients admitted to CEI OR. This includes neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients requiring ophthalmic care encompassing routine to complex diagnoses. Patient care is provided for both in and outpatients on a scheduled as well as emergent basis. 98% of the patients are cared for on an outpatient basis with the remaining 2% being in hospital patients. Regional referral covers the majority of emergency cases, especially for retina service.

Function/Duties of Position

Scientist: Evaluates knowledge of self and others:

  • Evaluates own knowledge and nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and evidence-based knowledge in consultation with peers and colleagues.
  • Evaluates knowledge and nursing practice of peers in relation to professional practice standards and evidence-based knowledge and provides feedback that enhances their growth and development.
  • Identifies complexities within OHSU systems and participates in resolving barriers to effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible care delivery.
  • Evaluates patient outcomes against nurse-sensitive indicators and participates in raising the standard of nursing practice when results are below benchmark.

Leader: Uses an evidence-based decision making process to determine the patient’s priority goals and care activities:

  • Gathers pertinent information from patient and others to establish relevant data base about the patient and the patient’s condition.
  • Determines changes in the patient’s condition and stability based on clinical parameters, population data, and nursing knowledge and evidence.
  • Uses a population and evidence based approach to determine the patient’s individualized priority goals and care activities in relation to: Nursing’s independent scope of practice (safety, comfort, hygiene, restorative measures, and health promotion); and in relation to the interdisciplinary plan of care
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care by evaluating the patient’s response, outcomes, and changes in stability and makes recommendations for modifications to the plan of care.
  • Speaks up immediately about concerns regarding assigned responsibilities and available resource.

Practitioner

  • Develops a therapeutic relationship with patients and families.
  • Implements direct and indirect nursing care consistent with evidence-based practices, hospital policies and procedures, scope and standards of practice, and Nursing’s Code of Ethics.
  • Delegates and supervises tasks consistent with other caregivers’ scope of practice, adhering to standards, regulations, and role expectations including self-care and collaborative teamwork.

Knowledge Transfer

  • Collaborates with the patient/family in developing a teaching plan to meet learning needs. Effectively transfers information about disease, health, treatment plan and recovery to patient, family and documents teaching and plan in the electronic record.
  • Communicates evaluation of patient’s stability, progress, discharge plan and recommendation for continuity of the medical and nursing plan to other members of the health care team, including accurate and timely documentation in the patient’s electronic record.
  • Effectively transfers knowledge to other members of the team to support the safety of their practice
  • Engages in collaborative and effective decision-making with other members of the team while maintaining caring and compassionate relationships.

Required Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing for external hires.

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of current inpatient perioperative surgical nursing experience, OR
  • Completion of an academic senior year Immersion / Integrated Practicum in an intraoperative setting with a minimum of 180 clinical hours.

Registrations, Certifications, Licenses

  • Current, unencumbered Oregon RN license
  • Current BLS certification at the provider level through the American Heart Association is required at time of hire
  • Current ACLS issued by AHA required at time of hire
  • Current PALS certification issued by AHA required at time of hire

  • Must be able to maintain safety, efficiency and standards of care especially with frequent and fast turnover of cases.
  • Must be able to deal with competing needs and priorities of internal and external customers, including making correct judgments regarding ensuring safe conditions for patients, families, and other personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

BSN preferred to internal candidates.

At least 2 years of experience in surgical setting which includes the specialty of Ophthalmology
