Director of Nursing

Roundup, MT

We are looking for a Director of Nursing to join our team!

Roundup Memorial Healthcare, a Billings Clinic affiliate organization, is a rural integrated health care organization. This integrated facility brings together a physician clinic and 25-bed critical access hospital services to deliver quality coordinated care that is convenient for our patients. Our board-certified family practice physicians and professional staff provide quality care for the entire family. Services offered include medical, surgical, and swing beds, hospice, physician clinic; emergency department, radiology and laboratory services, and physical therapy.

The Director of Nursing role provides nursing leadership for the development and advancement of nursing within RMH and provides leadership to some clinical support services. Insures that a consistent level of nursing care is provided throughout the continuum of care and is accountable for the quality and cost effectiveness of nursing services provided. Develops objectives, policies, and procedures to formalize and implement the mission, vision, and values of RMH. Accountabilities include quality of services; short-and long-range planning to achieve goals and objectives; fiscal control; physician and interdepartmental/intradepartmental relations; personnel management, customer relations, pharmacy, infection control, nursing education, case management, trauma designation, and equipment contract management.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

(1) Develops and oversees the Nursing Services Department to ensure adherence to RMH’s organizational mission, vision, values, strategic goals, business strategies, code of business conduct, and service expectations.Interprets, supports, and models the mission and philosophy of RMH. Responsible for promotion of, and adherence to, the elements of RMH’s Code of Business Conduct and corporate compliance program. Meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental, and outside agency environmental, employee, or patient safety standards relevant to job performance, and insures compliance of department and staff.

(2) Treats all patients/residents, families, and co-workers as welcomed guests; makes eye contact while communicating with or encountering guests, expresses a positive attitude (e.g., by smiling), greets all customers and co-workers, and introduces self as appropriate. 

(3) In collaboration with CEO and medical staff, develops and implements short-and long-range plans, and leads, develops and revises nursing and other assigned programs which enhance services for the critical access hospital (CAH), clinic and emergency departments. Responsibilities also include other services as assigned (e.g., Pharmacy), utilization review/case management, discharge planning, orientation and training of staff, and trauma designation.

(4) Develops, retains, recruits, and leads a talented team committed to accomplishing the goals and objectives of RMH.Recommends, implements, and evaluates plans and systems that assure a sufficient number of qualified and competent staff to provide care/services. Adjusts staffing plans as needed to insure appropriate skill mix to meet patient acuity needs. 

a) Develops and implements orientation, competency, and continuing education requirements and opportunities for all staff.

b) Conducts staff meetings and in-services on a routine basis and maintains minutes and attendance.

c) Responsible for nursing staff and other assigned services staff scheduling and to insure 24-hour call coverage is available.

(5) Develops and maintains an interdisciplinary total quality improvement program (TQM). Practices process improvement principles to assess and improve the quality of the services provided.

a) Responsible for monitoring, documenting, and improving the nursing and other assigned services process. 

b) Adheres to patient safety standards and identifies and anticipates problems and safety issues and initiates appropriate action. 

c) Analyzes and shares the practice implications of nursing research.

d) Directs compliance with all legal, regulatory, and/or accreditation standards or guidelines and insure quality of care standards are adhered to.

(6) Evaluates nursing practice, assigned services, and environment in contributing to the development of standards that assure quality patient care.

a) Develops and maintains policies and procedures assuring compliance with state, federal, legal, regulatory, and/or accrediting requirements and standards.

(7) Develops, implements, and maintains a realistic, cost-effective annual budget.

a) Manages donated funds, grants, and contracts appropriately.

b) Enhances operational effectiveness, emphasizing cost containment and enhancing patient access without compromising quality of care or patient safety.

c) Monitors periodic financial statements by measuring the relevant business activity and financial position of the assigned areas and the organization to insure appropriate financial management.

d) Develops and presents financial analyses by employing a variety of techniques (modeling, forecasting, benchmarking, cost/benefit analysis, etc.) to enhance understanding and improve decision making.

e) Establishes a system of controls by designing and enforcing checks and balances to minimize the risk of financial loss.

f) Monitors supply inventory, establishes PAR levels, and authorizes orders.

(8) Monitors appropriateness, timeliness, and accuracy of nursing and other assigned services documentation for all services provided to hospital, swing-bed and clinic patients.

a) Insures all documentation meets all legal and regulatory requirements and supports maximum allowable reimbursement from government and/or third party payers.

(9) Demonstrates and encourages an ethic of open communication and teamwork throughout the organization. Provides consultation for related concerns and acts as a customer advocate by demonstrating sensitivity to ethical and legal ramifications of practice.

a) Serves as a resource to patients, staff, physicians, and other healthcare providers.Assists with problem resolution.

b) Serves as a spokesperson for critical access hospital (CAH), emergency department, and clinic issues, and represents RMH within the community and with professional nursing related organizations.

c) Participates in community events as appropriate.

(10) Directs and supervises nursing and assigned service employees. Adheres to administrative policies and procedures relating to human resource management. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, orientation/training; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and/or coaching/counseling employees. 

(11) Participates in the environment, health, and safety management programs, with appropriate goals, objectives, and measures. Directs development and implementation of organization plans for crisis response for both internal and external emergent events.May be required to be and is authorized to serve as Incident Commander during crisis management situations.

a) Provides oversight to the maintenance of standards and regulatory requirements to maintain trauma designation. 

(12) Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency safety standards relevant to job performance.

(13) Acts properly, is present except for allowed time off, arrives on time, and follows RMH policies and procedures. 

(14) Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization. Maintains clinical expertise to work as a registered nurse providing direct patient care. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, Bachelors degree preferred

• Masters degree in Nursing, Hospital Administration or Business Administration desirable

• Four (4) years of clinical nursing experience, preferred

• Prior management experience preferred

• Current Montana state license as a registered Nurse

• BLS Certification

• ACLS certified or ability to achieve within six (6) months of hire

• TNCC and PALS certification preferred or ability to achieve within six (6) months of hire

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to the above tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered
