The Hospitalist Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides direct medical care to patients requiring hospitalization. They chart medical history, assess health status, diagnose any potential issues, and work with physicians and other health professionals to provide high-quality care. They are in charge of accurately filling out the patients' chart, as well as keeping it up to date as diagnoses and evaluation continue. The Hospitalist Nurse Practitioner also orders tests, collects data regarding the patients' status, and communicates with patients' family members as needed. Additionally, these professionals have to communicate regularly with the physician(s) and other members of the health care team to discuss status updates for patients.

Essential Functions

Performs evaluation and problem identification of patients.

Performs history and physical examination of patients.

Writes prescriptions, orders and interprets laboratory data and radiological tests.

Monitors patient status and response to treatments.

Documents findings in the medical record.

Recommends appropriate therapeutic interventions.

Provides education and counseling for patients. Directs patient and/or family to agencies dealing with specific illnesses/diseases.

Orders appropriate therapeutic interventions.

Performs procedures for which practitioner is credentialed as dictated by patient need.

Interacts with nursing staff.

Participates in daily team rounding, periodic M&M sessions and department conferences/teaching opportunities.

Participates in Departmental quality assurance, risk management, and compliance efforts.

Basic Requirement for Advanced Practice Nurse (Midwife): Degree: A graduate or higher-level degree from an accredited professional nursing educational program in Midwifery is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before.
