General Statement of Duties

Assesses, diagnoses, and treats individuals and families with psychiatric disorders using full scope of professional training and therapeutic skills, including the prescription of medication and administration of psychotherapy medicines and psychiatric care for patients receiving mental health services; performs related work as required.

Essential Duties

Performs nursing assessments and evaluations, including agency required documentation, vitals, urine drug screens, venipuncture, pharmacy calls/electronic prescribing and administration of medication including injections per prescribers orders; prior authorizations as needed and coordinates care with treatment team and various medical providers; documents clinical care in the electronic health record; provides client education, support, medication review, monitoring for medication use/misuse, monitors for withdrawal symptoms, makes appropriate health referrals when necessary and communicates with prescriber and team; provides on-site treatment team consultation and participates in interdisciplinary treatment planning meeting, team meeting and presents topics relevant to clinical needs; perform, interpret, record, and report on-site TB tests and other testing as ordered by the prescriber; inspect and maintain necessary medical supplies and communicates stocking needs to appropriate administrative staff. Experience in community mental health with persons with serious and persistent mental illness, preferred. Considerable knowledge of current Substance Use Disorder theory and practice and Recovery Models; considerable knowledge of causes, treatment, and prevention of substance Use Disorders; Considerable knowledge of available community resources useful in the treatment and prevention of Substance Use disorders; knowledge of the common medical and psychiatric co-morbidities and state of the art care models; knowledge and understand of fundamental concepts of normal and abnormal human behavior; ability to triage and respond to crisis; communicate effectively with a wide range of personalities, establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, family members, physicians and clinical staff; ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting and communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; adherence to basic ethics appropriate for a professional helping relationship; position requires travel to all four Henrico Area Mental Health and Developmental Services offices including the Providence Forge office and with individuals in the Jail Diversion program.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a post-secondary nursing program and two (2) years previous relevant nursing experience in a psychiatric care setting; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Nursing; QMHP certification; must hold or be qualified to work toward licensure or accreditation for the appropriate discipline.
A valid Virginia Driver's license required to perform assigned duties at various locations Countywide.
