General Statement of Duties Performs professional nursing and other related duties for the James River Juvenile Detention Center; does related work as required. Closing Date: This position closes on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Essential Duties Extensive knowledge of general nursing and nursing methods; extensive knowledge of first aid and physical hygiene; ability to teach nursing/first-aid skills to staff; ability to communicate well orally and in writing; ability to act independently and make decisions in critical situations when professional medical guidance isn't readily available. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing; OR , any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Additional Information Possession of a certificate as a registered professional nurse as issued by the State of Virginia. Depending on experience, this position can be underfilled as Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): Education: Graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing program Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse OR: Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Provides psychiatric treatment, support and rehabilitation to clients with serious mental illness on the ACT Team; may provide consultation and education services to specific populations; does related work as required. Essential Duties Psychiatric nurse position provides treatment, support, and rehabilitation to adults with a serious mental illness on the ACT Team. Duties include mental health and nursing assessments, service linkage, case management, medication monitoring, family support, assistance with daily living, crisis intervention. All services have a recovery focus. Provide on call support, hours include weekends and evenings. This is a specialized position and due to the nature of work performed, graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and a certificate as a registered professional nurse is desired to meet the position qualifications. Considerable knowledge of principles of community mental health and/or intellectual disabilities and/or substance use disorders; considerable knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts of normal and abnormal human behavior, personality development, family and group dynamics; considerable knowledge of and an ability to apply a variety of psychotherapeutic treatment techniques/modalities; adherence to basic ethics appropriate for a professional helping relationship; knowledge of mental health diagnoses, assessment, and/or psychological and educational testing; some knowledge of consultation program; considerable knowledge of psychosocial history development; very good interviewing and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; demonstrated ability to act with good judgment. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from a post-secondary nursing program; two (2) years previous relevant nursing experience in a psychiatric care setting. Additional Information Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing; Possession of a valid Virginia driver's license is required. TB Screening and Child Abuse Registry Check required, if offered employment. Must have graduated from an accredited school of professional nursing and possess a certificate as a registered professional nurse issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee. QMHP certification; must hold or be qualified to work toward licensure or accreditation for the appropriate discipline.
